Former coin club member cries fraud

“They’re telling the public (the coins they are selling) are original and they’re not. The problem was that it was getting to the point where 40 percent of the members (selling coins) were doing it.”

    Agreed, Rick.

<< <i>Agree. Sounds like a disgruntled club member was booted from the club and is now trying to get even with the other members. >>

You agree with Rick and then chuck a stone?

Outhaul... you have been around here long enough that you should not be surprised...

I can not recall a time, in my three years here, that perryhall or 291Fifth have done anything but throw stones... it is what they do... it is how they roll imageimage
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

I was just pointing out that there may be an alternate explanation as to what is really happening here. Is it so hard to believe there may be a hidden agenda on the part of the club member doing the complaining?

Edited to add that I deleted my original post since it was speculation on my part that the disgruntled club member may have been sincere in his belief that dipping a coin and selling as uncleaned constituted fraud.

Sounds like this guy has a problem with dipping. There are some here that do too but for UNC silver, it is not considered cleaning by almost everyone. --Jerry

Jerry, I think many/most people (including grading companies) do consider dipping to be cleaning. But an acceptable type of cleaning, if the coin is not over-dipped and then neutralized properly afterwards.

Dipping can either improve the look or a coin or ruin it.
Seldom will it have NO effect

And most coins are not candidates for dipping either. It appears original surfaces are becoming more desirable in the marketplace.

I prefer to reserve the term "cleaned" for harshly cleaned (hairlined) and refer to dipped coins as, dipped. I also am good with the term "unoriginal" for dipped coins. --Jerry

No, they make inflammatory statements about other members. Bylaws call for flammatory statements only.

first of all i am not surprised that this is in FL. geez. that state has some serious issues.

next i noticed the article mentions possibly cleaned coins in "containers" which makes
me think of self slabbers. who here is being reminded of ebay eh?

so honestly.. i consider this par for the course when it comes to buying coins. buyer
    beware....
