Question about my 1881-CC PCGS MS62 Coin

I recently purchased this coin because I felt it was way under graded (currently MS-62 blue holder). I am not sure what I should do at this point. I thought of cracking it out and submitting to NGC, or would I be better off to send it to PCGS for a review? The fields are at a minimum PL and in my opinion DMPL. I purchased an1882-O PCGS MS-63DMPL at the same time and side by side, the CC looks every bit as good, if not better than the 82-O. The 3rd pic is at an angle and shows more in detail of some discoloration that runs down the field and into the lower part of Liberty's chin and neck area. Is this enough to knock out the PL or DMPL designation? I can not tell if the discoloration is a problem in the planchet itself or if it is some kind of subtle toning. Any thoughts or imput would be greatly appreciated.

    They are very tight on PL's right now. Since the current holder is not a PL holder you dont have much risk. Some concern (may just be the lighting) is the area around states. If there is a break or haziness in the mirrors that can exclude it from the designation.

    What is the crescent shaped discoloration in the obverse field?

    The bottom picture gives the appearance of a coin that has been dipped and re-toned, and which looks unoriginal. Based on that, I wouldn't crack it out.

    The haze around STATES is a reflection because of my less than perfect photography skills. I do not know what the discoloration is. I am not sure if it is a stain or a streak of toning. It does not appear that the discoloration lies on the field. The mirror quality does not break where the discoloration is, but seems continuous over the discoloration. I do not know if it could be the result of a contaminant in the silver when the planchet was made.

    I agree with Mark... it would seem the dip was not cleaned properly and left residue. Cheers, RickO

    I guess my thought on that would be that PCGS probably would not have graded it in the first place. I know I have had stuff returned "Genuine" or body bagged before they went to the "Genuine" label.

    Not necessarily - it depends on the severity. If it wasn't too bad, the coin might have been "netted" from 63 to 62, for example.

    Additionally, the coin might not have looked like that at the time it was slabbed.

    The coin is misgraded (its a 64) but does it really matter? The price differntial is only a few dollars so its not worth regrading. Enjoy the coin as is. Its the same coin whatever the label says.

    Yeah you are right Mark on the bottom pic. Just seems to me that other than a point of conversation the grade does not matter much due to the tight price diff between grades.

    I agree about the narrow price spread between grades. That, plus the odd appearance of the coin in the bottom images should make it a "leave it as is" proposition.
