    I wonder if it was some sort of die capping issue.

    My first thought was a brockage of some sort, but that wouldn't be right, would it? I don't think so.

    I don't know, I thought that too....the letters in erty look legit to me. The 19 and the 2 also look ok.

    Thanks Jonathan B, that must be what it is.... here is what I pulled from coinfacts

    COUNTERBROCKAGE
    A counterbrockage error involves a capped die and a previously struck coin. When a capped die strikes a previously struck coin, the obverse design from that struck coin will be impressed into the cap. The result will be a design where the cap face will be an incuse brockage. When a new blank is struck by this capped die with an incuse brockage image, the obverse will have a raised and spread image from that incuse design of the cap. This brockage impression is known as a counterbrockage.

    Yep, definitely a counterbrockage. I assume it has the normal die orientation?

    To clarify that definition:

    Coin A was struck and adhered to the reverse die to form the start of a reverse die cap. It may or may not begin to spread outwards under subsequent strikes;

    A blank planchet, not a capped die, is struck between the obverse die and the raised obverse of the previously struck reverse die cap. It becomes Coin B, a brockage error, and adheres to the obverse die to form an obverse die cap with an incused obverse design in it.

    Coin A leaves the coining chamber, either immediately or after few more strikes that spread the incused obverse design in the obverse die cap (Coin B) outwards.

    A new blank planchet is struck between the spread-out incused obverse in Coin B and the normal reverse die to form Coin C, this coin.
