raw gold grade?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't have much experience with grading gold in the first place, but this series just seems extra tough.

These are a monster to grade, I'd say XF details, cleaned.

I knew if I waited long enough I'd get a grade I like image

You guys are harsh! Keep in mind this image is indoors under florescent lighting with a hand-held Canon powershot.

No heavy "luster", but does this series really have that anyway?

    40-45-ish. Probably cleaned.

Why no grade? Looks like an original XF45 to me.

    You tell 'em, Perry! image

I think it's natural and probably correct for most unslabbed XF and up gold to be somewhat suspect. If it was perfect it would be in plastic, right?

But I don't get cleaned off of this one, at least not marketunacceptablecleaned.

Here's me: Borderline AU and nicely struck. XF49 image

Those that say "cleaned" should remember that this coin has an incused design which had all design elements below the surface of the fields and there were no raised rims. Hence, the fields had no protection from hairline/fine scratches from circulation. Also, notice the dirt trapped in the incused design elements. This has the look of a typical circulated Indian quarter and half eagle.

Obverse XF45 maybe better. Reverse AU53. The top of the wing looks pretty nice with a little rub. Or maybe a weak strike reverse.
    Overall it's at least XF45.

What would an MS example of a (common date) indian half run right now? It's such a beautiful design...

    40, Cleaned.
You can see no detail on the headdress.
  • Looks like a 45 to me. The striations don't look too severe, but it does show signs of an abrasive cleaning. Finding these coins with clean fields and with a nice original patina is hard to do, but with patience can be done. I even like finding them with a small carbon spot or two because they are usually absent in cleaned coins.

My first thought was 'XF cleaned' too. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's a very typical condition for these coins.
