Yes, it was from 2004, and I had a feeling that it was at least part of what the OP was speaking of.

    What am I promoting

Well back in like 2004 and before members talked about thier coins and collections.

Now it has little to do with ones collection.

Now it is like what do you think of this and that.

and let me take a jab at ...........

not promoting the hobby in ANY way shape or form..

I don't mind a little direct self promotion. If it goes over the top, then it becomes a problem. As with all of the threads, I tend to read and respond to what I want, and the others I ignore.

Well...here's my wag on this issue: If someone has a particularly desirable (to him/her) coin, it's hard not to want to tell everyone about it/show it off. I mean---if I had a 1913 Lib Nick for example, I'd surely want to share it with other members.

OTOH, there's a difference between bragging about a coin, or bragging about yourself. If/when I see a thread that does nothing except puff up the poster, I just ignore it and move on.

I really appreciate this forum. I've learned a lot (even at my advanced age), I've purchased and sold a lot of coins here, and I've never had an unpleasant issue.

I personally have more of a distaste when people post pictures of coins that are not theirs in the coin sharing threads. It's like, yeah I can google coin images too thanks. I think that as a rule of thumb it should be that people post coins they own or once owned. Or in the exception of cases of asking about a certain coin that is for sale in the form of research either for purchase or some kind of error or important current issue like AT or doctoring.

All of the self promoting threads I can think of

involve a poster who has been banned or no longer posts here

so they drift into 'deep search' area

can you cite an example of something more recent than say 6 years - since it is happenong more and more it seems to you

    I see what you mean.

But that R&I thread (or any R& I thread, for that matter!) turns out to be self DEmotion because of the negative posts that invariably accompany RT's self-promotion attempts.

Coud it possibly be that we know each other a bit better over the years?

I mean, I like coins and I like discussing them and learning new things but sometimes friendship comes into play and screws all that up.

    It's still fun though.

I self promote my knowledge and expertise on Franklins here all the time , it's a ego thing I believe-

and I'm sharing and promoting the collecting of my beloved Franklin's .

I pop R&I's posts about his books to the top quite often - the books are knowledge and good for the hobby

heck , there are advertisements plastered all over these message boards

the whole idea of the boards is to promote the PCGS empire

What is it called when someone promotes someone else?

    i.e; When ArizonaJack promoted MarkFeld

Is this a form of promotion?

Not that I cared, I just wonder why it was locked.
