Anyone recommend a good safe???

ZubieZubie Posts: 1,160 ✭✭✭✭
I have a small safe and need a bigger one. Looking for something around $500 (if at all possible) that is around 18"inx3 inside.
Not even sure where to look, my first was my dads old safe he gave me 20 years ago.
Im not sold on storing my stash in a safe deposit box in California anymore.

Thanks!

Would like to add that Im renting right now and can't obviously cut into floorboards or walls.

Also wondering if the old combo lock or the newer electronic keypad is better???

  • Zubie ......... Often times ebay is a good place to check ...... Local lock and safe places often have good used safes as well.

Try to get a safe that is rated TL-30 or better..... and if you get it from a safe or lock shop,

many times they will deliver it for free, to make the sale!

A tip for any one thinking about getting a safe.....

NEVER get an electronic lock. Go with a combination dial lock ONLY.

The joke, not so funny, is that it's not if -- but when -- an electronic lock will fail.

Any idea what it costs to have a safe drilled? Even a simple gun safe?

I know a safe guy that makes his living just opening failed electronic lock safes.

Why is it that everytime someone posts a thread about safes, someone comes up with a link to a gun safe site? Gun safes have their purpose....they are nice safes for guns! You will never see a gun safe in a pawn shop, jewelry store, or coin shop. You wanna know why? Because they arent real safes...they are just nice lock boxes. Like SilverBaron said...get a TL-30 (a TL-15 is even far better than a gunsafe too). The OP says he wants to spend under $500. I dont know what the OP is trying to protect, but it must not be too valuable if all he wants to spend is $500. Unless you can get a decent used TL-15 for that much, I wouldnt worry about the price as an absolute number, but rather as a ratio of what you are storing in the safe. For example, if you have a few thousand worth of bullion, then a $500 safe makes sense. But if you are into the tens of thousands, why not spend good money on a great safe? Wouldnt it be worth it to spend $2500 on a great safe if you intend to store $25,000 worth of stuff in it? Although there may be deals to be found, in the end, you get what you pay for. Get a REAL safe Zubie!

It is VERY cost effective to have your local lock / safe dealer swap out the ele lock for a dial lock.

Just MHO on this, safes are a pretty obvious place to hide your valuables. And most, especially gun safes, are disturbingly simple to open by experienced crooks.

While many coin shops are targeted by "experienced crooks", the vast majority of home burglaries are committed by some amature or some kid or some crackhead living in the neighborhood. Most gun safes will stop these folks cold.

I do agree with you, but why even chance it? For about the same amount of cash as a fancy gunsafe, one can buy a TL-15 or even a TL-30. Combine that with a top of the line home security system and even a sophisticated criminal will have a tough task of getting your stuff! Criminals hate 3 things more than anything...loud noises...time limits...and TL rated safes.

Good Stuff Silver Baron....exactly what I need to start looking. After I first posted and started looking online and found that real safes start at $500. Looks like I'll hold off on buying another 30 or 40 ozs of silver and look for something around $1000-1500. I found a few types online...Amsec and Cobalt...anyone have experience with either? Thx guys.

First I'll determine if you want the safe to protect from burglary, fire or water damage.
I think Costco have one, even in homedepot I see gun safes.
I hear you about the banks, but I believe you should reconsider bank deposit box again...

So, just for the sake of discussion, what is the problem with this one?

Actually you can buy a barking dog alarm that is a motion sensor that sets off the barking dog sound. And that does the duty, but not in the backyard.

Years ago I was faced with the same dilemma (living in an apartment) I ended up stashing my coins in the broiler pan of the stove.... which I never used.

Creative until someone else is visiting and uses the oven. My grandmother kept all her goodies buried at the bottom of the freezer - no risk of burning.

There are things that you buy that you buy on the cheap, toastor ovens, fans, mixers. Then there are things you don't want on the cheap, yard hoses, auto tires, and safes!image

    TL-30?
    image

I like the old antique safes from the cowboy movies. I suppose those are n ot being discussed because they are easy to crack or drill?

Easy access I think, I've had the type that went on stages, like a strongbox, heavy as hell but very easy to get in to.
