Opinion on ebay auction

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have been thinking about a set of Liberty nickels, so I thought I would browse ebay to see what raw coins are out there. I came across this coin. Although well struck the luster on it, especially on the reverse looks strange. Im worried it has been cleaned. Opinions? I will probably stick with certified coins when making the collection!

I have read similar posts about the seller, but always like to be fair and as unbiased as possible.

the seller honors the seven day return policy, in case you ever find something worth a shot.

Their photos always seem very juiced. They always appear to have the best raw coins on ebay and their raw coin auctions usually go well over the real value of a coin. I don't know. Either their pics are cleaned up or they just happen to sell the nicest "looking" coins on ebay.

Based on what I see on Liberty's neck and at the central reverse (marks and/or wear, in each case), the coin looks like it grades somewhere between AU and MS62, and it is already bid up to MS63 money. So, based on that, alone, I would pass.

Never mind that it's usually impossible to grade coins accurately from images, that the seller appears to over-grade his offerings. has a bad reputation and that it's a bad idea to buy coins out of auctions on a sight-unseen basis..image

Seller feedback not withstanding, the mark in the Obverse PFA would prevent me bidding on the coin. There are lots of these 5Cers out there in good shape. I'd keep looking.

From the photos, which always have their limitations, the coin appears to have nice luster, but the number small marks also indicates that the coin is not Gem Uncirculated (i.e. MS-65). Given that it is raw and the price is already high, I’d say pass.

Even on toolhaus youd think youd see more bad feedback. The amount he has inst that unexpected for his volume. Im not saying his coins arent bad, I know the seller is known for juiced pics. Im just surprised that many people are leaving good feedback.
