Toning with modern gold and PCGS slabs

drfishdrfish Posts: 947 ✭✭✭✭
This is by no means a scientific conclusion but it seems from viewing tons of auction listings, outcomes with my personal collection, and posts from very experienced modern collector/dealers that modern gold in PCGS slabs runs a much higher risk of toning. My own observation is that the west point gold eagles tone very attractively with periperal rose toning(cool) while the Buffalos and spouses can end up with red dots and streaks(uncool).....What are your observations?Has PCGS also noted the issue?Any upcoming fixes?

  • I agree with your assessment.....I have seen plenty of modern gold with toning forming in PCGS holder....much more so then with NGC holder but I don't know why that would be unless it's just different storage conditions. It could also be that folks don't like toned gold so they dump it on the market but keep the untoned pieces in their collections image

Toned gold comes from the copper and/or silver alloy metals. The plastic has nothing to do with it.

Saint Guru is correct... alloy material or impurities will tarnish... gold does not tarnish. Cheers, RickO
