1864 L.M. 2¢...Grade? Variety?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,454 ✭✭✭
I count this as one of my luckier recent purchases. Personally, I don't see any rub on this coin offhand but I'm curious to know what you guys see. The coin has some fantastic surfaces and some die cracks (like the thin one near the date). One of the coolest 2-centers I've purchased in a looooooong time! On a different forum, one member believes it might be a Breen 2376, KF-l26-TPD. Opinions?

For those answering, "58"...why? Are you just being ultra conservative or are you seeing something that I'm not?

    It is an option!

You could have forced us to just think MS by only putting 60 (and up) grades

If you're not seeing pix, try back later...I think PhotoBucket is having issues.

I realize it's an option and, in fact, I put it there specifically because I realize there are those that will choose that (even though I stated I don't see rub in hand). I'm just curious as to what factors cause you to choose that? No biggie...I'm not trying to enforce a grade. My eyes might be fooling me! Or, PCGS might not want to assign an MS grade for some reason I'm not aware of but you guys might have more experience with.

Nice 2 Cent. I said MS62. It is a RPD, I'm not sure which variety. I don't have reference material with me.

Weakness in the left leaves, L shaped mark to left of left leaves. Strength in the vertical lines in the shield, firmness in the centers of the arrows, strong WE. Numerous marks and ticks. Are what I'm using to grade it MS62.

It also shows signs of being clashed. This is noticeable below CENTS, with evidence of the horizintal shield lines through NTS in CENTS.

Personally, I like die cracks on 2 Cents. I once had an 1864 LM MS66RD that was all busted up with cracks. It was neat!

I voted AU58 because I thought it looked like a ms61 or two and I always over grade everything.

I'm going with 58, because I think there are too many hits for that coin not to have seen some circulation. If it truly is uncirculated, then it's a 60BN.

Here is my example and grade for comparison.

Too many hits on the reverse to be a 58
I'm guessing AU 53 at best

Isn't the "definition" of an MS60 coin one where it has no rub but is beaten to hell? Why would # of hits on an uncirculated coin equivocate to a circulated grade?

    MS61BN...
You may want to treat it with acetone before sending it out. I see some areas of verdigris.
