Barber Half Question

I am new to collecting. I just purchased this on ebay and I am starting to have a love hate relationship with the process. This coin looks much darker than in the photos. I am still within my return period and want to know if this coloring is natural. It just doesn't seem right. Any thoughts would be appreciated for a newbie. Would a TPG assign a grade to this?

Based on the photo, which isn't very good, I'd guess it has been cleaned at some point, possibly long ago, but has started retoning. The roughness on the surface suggests that this coin was buried for some time and became corroded.

    I don't like the coin.

I would say that whether or not the coins color is natural, it is clear you dont like it. Return it and get one you like. You will be much happier.

The fact that "LIBERTY" is complete is a plus, and depending on the cost of the coin, I think your eye for detail isn't too bad and that is a good sign. It will net grade, at the very least, and depending on how deep you're into it, is a determining factor on how good of a deal you got.

Return it while you still can.

The loss of any money for return shipping
is a cheap price to pay for tuition. Learning
experiences can be enjoyable if you limit
yourself to buy precertified coins - ie: PCGS.

If you buy raw coins - you'll be second guessing
yourself every time; and also: NEVER buy raw
coins on eBay - at least until you are better
    educated.

There are people that will be a better source for you but I would say that at 70$ you didnt get ripped off, but that you could find a piece you like for that price. I'd say that if you had liked the coin, 70$ would be a decent price for that.

That's some great advice "Buy Certified First"! image

Unfortunately this is never the case with new collectors as they mostly entrust the seller or dealer on multiple raw purchases... till they find out the hard way! image

You are fortunate to have found this forum. Take the time to read as many posts as you can as there is much to learn. I would consider $70 an initiation fee. MANY have spent far more before becoming educated regarding coins.

One other comment is to buy and read some books on the series that interests you most. In the long run it will save you a lot of money and make collecting far more enjoyable as you will be getting value for your money instead of being ripped off.

    Happy Collecting!!

Thanks very much everyone. So far I am most interested in CBH and Barber Quarters. This forum is extremely helpful.

In the past 10 months or so I have submitted 85 Barbers, with 3 exceptions, all were F-XF coins (2 AUs and 1 AG). Of those, 11 were not graded, and that includes a few coins that were sent in twice.

In my experience/opinion that's a harshly cleaned coin that's been artificially recolored, send it back. It does have VF25-30 details however... I heard someone say you paid $200, it's an 07-S I assume? If it is that's a shame as it's a very tough date, but you still need to return it.

I'm not a fan. Looks cleaned, poorly retoned, and suffering from environmental damage. I'd return it while you can. My guess is you will never come to love it and will have a hard time selling it later.

You want to see what nice mid-grade barber halves look like? Find the mega-barber half forum about "Post a barber coin" or something like that. You can use the "search" feature of these boards. There are many very nice coins illustrated throughout and those with the dirty battleship grey color without shiny polished surfaces are the most coveted by the real devoted collectors.

Much of the available material, eBay and elsewhere, for barber coins has been cleaned, sometimes harshly and the value of such coins is greatly diminished. You are far better off learning the difference and spending your hard earned money on nice coins. It will be worth it.
