Anyone know where I can get a1901S Barber Quarter for the "fair" price?

There is such a huge jump between grades, so I am at the bottom of the barrel on this one. Looking for an AG to G.

It is the only coin I need for the Barber Dansco.

Thanks.

This one has issues, but has good detail beneath the cuts and dings, and is under $600, albeit with 6 days still left on the auction (which is not mine btw).
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

If you can make it to a major show, like FUN, that would be my recommendation. The way things are today, finding any 1901-S quarter at a local show would be really tough. When I’ve been after a hard to find coin or a group of coins, I’d work the entire floor to (sometimes 500 + tables) to find what I wanted.

I’d also think about certification. With the Chinese out there making anything you want, I could see them knocking out some 1901-S quarters and giving them the rock tumbler treatment. Note the thread by another board member who purchased some well worn counterfeit Peace dollars recently.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • NortheastNumismatics.com has a 1901-S Barber Quarter NGC Fair2. Looks like an original, well-worn piece at $2100. Make an offer.

    If I may...

I would personally save up and wait for at least a solid VG example. Even if it means you wait a year or two. I'm starting on the quarters in VF-XF and I plan to buy the big 3 in at least VF35, ideally XF. I don't plan on buying them next week image

Something else to consider. Develop a good relationship with a dealer and talk to them about extended layaway terms. They won't do this for just anyone and you may end of paying a little more, but chances are you'll really get what you're looking for. For example (I'm a small time dealer) I have a customer that needed a 94, 89CC, and 93-S to complete his Morgan dollar collection. Any of these on there own were too much for him to purchase at one time. We agreed to extended payment terms on the individual pieces. When he was done paying for one, I found the next one and so on. During the next six months he will be making the last payments on the last coin and is tickled pink. I'm tickled to, not just because I made money, but because I helped him finish a set he thought would never be complete.

Thank you all for the tips. Let me go through some of them...

We do not have local shows here. Rinky dink town in the Florida panhandle. FUN is next January, so I will have to wait till then for a major show.

As for the coin linked in the auction, this is not a coin I would be willing to purchase raw. I appreciate the thought though. I am surprised fairtraderz did not send that coin in to get slabbed, even if only a gennie slab. I bet they would get more money for it that way.

More than likely, I will save up for one with more detail as rld14 suggested. image

    Thanks again guys...

I would check ebay over a long period of time, and look for a coin in an ANACS holder. That's how I ended up buying a low end 16-D Merc for a good price.

  • Larry Whitlow, LTD has a PCGS G4 listed at $5,250, which seems a fair price as a starting point. It seems quite a respectable coin for the grade, offered by a very solid firm. Mike Printz, at Larry Whitlow, is a good guy to work with as well.

  • WOW! That is a very strong G-4 from Larry! Most of these that I have seen have incomplete reverse rims.
All coins kept in safety deposit box.
  • Larry Whitlow at whitlowltd.com has a 1901-S PCGS G4 for $5250. Mike Printz has a great touch with coin photography. Both Northeastnumismatics and Larry Whitlow are excellent companies to deal with.
