How Old, Rare is this Silver "Bar"

Jinx86Jinx86 Posts: 3,710 ✭✭✭✭✭
This "bar would have been purchased by my grandfather back in the 60's or 70's. It was then a wedding gift to my mom and dad then given to me as a part of my wedding gift.

I brought this in the local dealer and he offered very strongly on the spot for it saying he had a buyer willing to pay whatever was asked. I was offered spot price for twice its weight, he actully offered higher spot on 25 ounces. Which would be nearly $500, hard to turn down on an ugly lump of silver. But I thought Id post in here and see what people think of it.

Why sell? The family history is important to you, obviously.

Grandfather's? Wedding gift to your parents then to you? For $500?

I wouldn't sell it unless I needed the money for food!

same question: selling family heirlooms? why?

if trying to learn about it, how about a closeup picture of the inscription? what did you say it weighs?

Its stamped "Black Hills" "Sterling Silver" "12 .OZ"

My grandfather was the one who started me investing in silver/coins and such. He always was going to auction sales buy up what ever he thought he could resell for a profit, problem is he didnt really like to selling anything till he knew it was the best possible money he could get. Hes the reason I'm 24 and have a basement full of antiques.

I wouldn't consider this to be a heirloom any more than much of the stuff that you probably inherited. Agree with the take the money and run sentiment. It's not worth nearly as much as they are offering you.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
