How much is a trillion dollars?

Trillion dollars put into perspective

This guy has a series called "crash course" that takes the viewer through the fundamentals of this nation's crisis. Unfortunately some of the chapters are missing on youtube. I will be buying the collection on DVD. It should be required viewing in all high school curriculums. People need to worry much less about American Idol, and a little more about the financial fate of this nation, and the underlying problems that caused this mess.

That's a good point. Why aren't we teaching "sound money" in the educational system?

One of the first things I did when teaching Physics was to estimate how big a trillion was. We supposed Jesus Christ was spending $1,000,000. per day, from his birth to the present date. He still would not have spent a trillion dollars. Sobering.

You can watch the whole Crash Course by Chris Martenson at his web site. Click on the link then scroll down for the 20 clickable chapters:

The DVD version is slightly compressed compared to the website version but still a good reference to have for friends and family to see.

A TRILLION is huge, but how about a QUADRILLION?

The International Bank of Settlements recorded $1.14 QUAD of notional otc derivatives in effect during 1st half of 2008. The number of total derivatives would be much larger as those were only reported ones. Because the QUAD was impossible to comprehend they adjusted the entire system of derivatives by valuing them to maturity. That brought the number down to a "workable" $693 TRILL by 2nd half of 2008....though it didn't change the number of contracts still in existence and the potential for losses.

Jesus could have spent $1 BILL per day from birth and still not reach $1 QUAD today. The US is currently spending $4 BILL per day and given enough time should catch up and pass Jesus.

That $4 billion a day figure that the U.S. is spending is only accounts for the deficit spending. Total U.S. Federal Gov't expenditures in 2010 average $10 billion a day!

    -------------------------------------------------

Another interesting note about a trillion: The top 4 companies in the U.S. in assets all list OVER $1 trillion in assets on their balance sheet! Of course the liabilities side is over $1 trillion too! Yes - all big banks!

The two examples I used in a high school last fall was:
    1) A dollar bill end to end will reach from the earth to the sun, 93 million miles away.
    2) A stack of quarters from the earth to the moon, 250,000+ miles away.

the better question is what is the interest on 1 trillion dollars over 40 years. image
