Parsippany, NJ Coin Show Report

Today was the monthly Parsippany, New Jersey Coin show. This is one of the biggest monthly coin show in the US. You can find a variety of items from early copper, foreign coins, to various paper money. The show runs from approximately 9am to 2pm. There is a main room which has 50+ dealers ,and a smaller room with 6-8. In the small room, you will find a dealer with an array of supplies.
I arrived at the show at approximately 10am, and the floor was already buzzing with people. Gold was EVERYWHERE, but it seemed that not many people were buying at the current prices. Silver was moving much easily and was less plentiful. I did see some beautiful hand poured and englehardt bars ranging from 5 to 100ozs. The premium for these bars prevented them from selling in my opinion. My first stop was at Tom Hylands table. Tom and I spoke before the show, and he had picked up a few holed coins for my holed 7070 type set. Hey, its cheap fun! I tried to take a look at Larry Greenstone's coins a few times, but his table was always busy with customers. When I did catch up with him, I looked at his vast selection of US type coins and picked out a beautiful 1808 Bust Half in VF with subtle toning. My next stop was at dealer PK Coins who sets up to the far left of the show, and takes about 5 or 6 tables. I saw a nice 1805 G6 Quarter in their case, and it was too nice not to buy. For the currency buffs, I saw an odd amount of lower grade $500 bills. One of them had quite a bit of writing, and was priced very fairly.
It seems that the economy is slowly picking up, as a few dealers I spoke with had very good turnouts. I did see some new material, but much of the older stuff was still sitting. These dealers will have to wait for the right buyer, or end up taking a loss in moving it. I personally would rather take a small loss than sit on a high priced coin when the money could be used elsewhere.
After my usual rounds, I met up with board members rld12 joebb21 aka the fonz
. We chatted about coins in general, making money on them, flipping, me staying away from problem coins (I know I know), and about life in general. It was a pleasure to walk the floor with them, and get their thoughts on some items. I went to the show looking for some early gold, or gold from Charlotte or Carson City. There was one lonley cleaned example in the entire room!
If you live anywhere near NJ, this is a great show that is worth the trip! You will find a nice selection of most coins.
Some newp images to come!
