CC Special Results 1879 IHC MS66RB w/ Trueview

I have enjoyed reading the message boards and have decided to join in. My father and I are co-owners of this 1879 Indian Cent MS 66RB that we sent in for the for the CC Special. The coin was already in a 66RB holder but I was hoping this coin would get a "+" because the surfaces, lustre and toning are amazing! IMO it is in the top 20% of the grade. I hope the Trueview pics shows up in the post. All opinions are welcomed...... Do you think this should have received a "+"?

Nice. Has eye appeal to spare, for sure. To me, 66+ would mean "shot 7." It starts getting hard to make the call between high grades like that from pictures, but I'll say "+" for you. Just as important for that coin is the doctoring deterrent inherent in the new holder.

Thanks for the opinions. I just wanted to make sure I was not crazy. I like the coin just as much without the +. It just would have been nice to get a grade for once.

    Joe,

I'm with the MS67 crowd. A 66plus would be a bit of an insult to that coin. I have seen few better!

    Joe,
Welcome to the boards. Nice first post.

Heck of a nice coin. I can't really tell 66 from 67 from the pic, but I sure don't see anything in my mind that keeps it from that. Hence at a minimum I'm in the "+" crowd.

That's just a premium coin no matter what. I wouldn't care what holder it was in because anyone who sees that coin is going to like it. From a value or resale point of view, I think that piece is a 67 all the way (from what I can grade off the pix) and if someone wanted it in a 66 holder, they'd pay 67 money anyway.

    Superb piece, and welcome . . .

It sure is a beauty, Joe. Congrats.

Some folks feel a plus is harder to earn on a high grade coin. So don't be disappointed. It's a lovely coin regardless.

    And welcome to the board.

I can't come up with any superlatives that haven't already been used. That is one stunning Indian. Man, if that's not a "+" or a 67, I can't wait to see one. Or maybe I'd better not, probably put my eyes out.

It's hard to imagine what a coin in this grade needs to look like in order to get the + if this one didn't.

    Wow, that coin is gorgeous!

Joe, as others have said, welcome to the boards. And thank you for posting a truly beautiful coin (I have been looking at AU Bust $s for the last year or so, and the coins typically run from cleaned to hideous).

Whether your coin is a 6 or a 7 depends on its eye appeal, because I don't see any contact marks, carbon spots, etc. You need good eye appeal for a type coin to get into a 6 holder. It has been my experience that the powers that be often allow a contact mark in a non-grade sensitive area. But the eye appeal must be superior to get it into a 7 holder.

Plus or no plus, a superior type coin for the grade will bring a premium. Personally, I wouldn't submit the coin unless I thought it was a shot coin.

Thanks for the post and congrats on the grade. If there was to be any 66+ IHC this should be the prime example (if not a 67).
  • Thanks again for all the positive comments. I recently reviewed the pop report for MS Indians. PCGS has graded one 66RB + and there is a pop of zero MS 67RB's. I guess to get a 66RB + or 67RB the coin has to be all there technially as well as 99% Red. For education purposes I would love to see a pic of the 66RB +. If the owner of the coin is on the boards, please post a pic.

Maybe that's the problem?? There wasn't $65 to begin with as it was sent under the special.
