I like "look what walked into the shop today" stories. Anybody have any new or old ones?

Aside from the normal worn out wheaties and junk 90%, has anything just appeared lately?

The nicest coins that came into the shop have been:
1938-D WLH in Like AU50
1883 WC Nickel AU

Other than those two nothing nice this whole year.

the closest i came to anything was last weekends coin show. 3 condor tokens in au - bu. i dont remember which ones i saw now ( what a bummer )

Here are some recycled ones from Allgood Coin in St George, UT

What walked in the shop today (7-3-06)
I got a phone call yesterday (on my cell, since we're closed on Monday's)
from a man in Las Vegas. He told me his name and asked if I remembered him.
I said no (I'm terrible with names, but I can remember phone numbers from 40
years ago). He reminded me that he had been in a couple of weeks ago and
had some Morgan Dollars to sell and he was coming through town and could we
get together.

We met at the shop and he brought in one of those metal briefcases looking
like it weighed 40 lbs. We sat and talked for a while as he started pulling
out old blue Whitman folders and rolls of dollars. He told me he had sent
the collection (the folders) off to a dealer "back East" a couple of years
ago from an ad he saw in Coin World. He didn't like the offer so he had
them send it back. Then about a month ago he took it out and noticed that
his 1893 S had been replaced by an 1895 S. Of course it was too late to do
much about it.

The set was complete except for the 93 S, plus there were 20 extra rolls of
Morgan & Peace dollars (did I mention he also had a complete set of Peace
Dollars?). One roll was marked "CC", it contained 1889, 1890 &1891 CC's
(2-1889, 9-1890 & 9-1892)

After we finished the deal, he said he wanted to take me to lunch. We walk
into the local Denny's and as we sat down he said, "Now, let's talk about
the big stuff. Can you handle $100K at a time?" He then proceeded to tell
me that he has cancer and will probably die within 2 years and wants to sell
off all of his collection and his "several hundred" ounces of gold.

What walked in the shop today. 10-5-06
Boy, was this one of those weird days...
Started off today with a gal bringing in 13 100oz J&M Silver bars and 20
Gold Eagles and some other odds and ends. $25K spent in the first 30
minutes. She leaves and in walks a guy (about 85 years old) with a 2x2 box
with about 30 Morgan Dollars. He saved them back in the 1950's and wants to
sell them. 10 of them are CC's, 1878's 1882-1885 and 1889-1891. I told him
I'd pay him $7200 for his coins. He thought they were worth a couple hundred
dollars. A few other small collections come in worth about $5K total. That
brought the days buy up to $37+K and it's not even lunch yet.

Things quiet down and then a van pulls up in front and parks. 3 men get out,
2 in their 50's and 1 in a walker in his late 80's. The 2 younger guys bring
out a hand cart and start loading heavy boxes on it. They bring in a load of
rolled Morgan & Peace Dollars. The old guy owned a bar/casino and started
saving Dollars in 1946. He saved 4066 of them. They also brought in some
silver rounds.

Their comment was, "We've heard you guy are very honest, just go through
them and figure out what they're worth and send us a check" I did a spot
check of about 200 and most are XF-AU with a couple of CC's.

We'll see what tomorrow brings...

There was a story a while back about a 1901 s barber quarter that walked in the door for melt. That thread had a lot of posters taking both sides.

I never heard how it ended.

I saw a pic of a 1901 s barber quarter in a pcgs holder graded vg-8, not sure if same coin. What did it finally sell for if sold.

That does sound like an honest dealer. I've sent coins for sale to dealers before so they could view them in hand, most times their response is "what would you like for them?"

If the gentleman in the story had walked into another coin dealers and was confronted with the question above and asked for "a couple of hundred dollars" and the dealer didn't let on as to what they were worth, he might have missed out big time.

A 1793 Half Cent walked in the door last fall. The owner bought it for slightly above AG-3 money, and promptly got it into a VF holder. He is very proud of himself.
