Thoughts on this 1800 $5 Half Eagle

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
I am looking at this coin in the current Heritage auction. I did some research on prices, and had somone at Heritage pull the coin and describe it to me over the phone. The prices is a little strong based on previous auctions. Everything looks good except for the dig, and a few adjustment marks. It might sky rocket, but what does everyone think about this?

  • Nice details, but the longer I owned it the more that ding in the field would begin to bother me.

It looks horrible. The surfaces are funky and gunky.

No thanks. I would rather save up a bit more and get a nicer example free of any eye distractions.

Instead of buying a couple damaged examples, wouldn't a single no problem example be a better route image

It doesn't look Uncirculated. My holed one looks better to me. But I like holed coins as opposed to other damage. At the current level, it is probably an ok buy as it might be able to be repaired. Don't have a clue about the cost of repair. At $5500 you are probably bidding against coin doctors. I think it will mushroom in price because of the overgrading. Imo.

Unlike many damaged pieces of this sort, the problem is centered on that mark in the right field. As such it's better than most, which often have extensive damage. but I'd still be reluctant to put $5,500 into a coin like this. A nice, certified AU would cost you $12,000 or so, and it could be a little less given the current market.

I'd save my pennies and buy a better one. The damage spot is on the obverse, which is the more important side. That mark will always be there to draw your attention from the coin, and that defect will hold down value of the coin when and if the market prices go up for this type.

That tiny gouge would be easy enough to smooth over by an expert coin repairer such as Stockton and, if done properly, the repair would not be detectable.

<< <i>Which problem bothers you the least the dig or the cleaning? >>

According to Heritage, the lines across Liberty are adjustment marks, not cleaning. But it may have been cleaned as many older coins have been.
So from what I see and what I was told, the main issue is the dig, which is noted as damage on NCS's holder. I will consider it, but will not go much higher.

I understand what many are saying regarding buying a higher grade coin for 3-4k more. My wife and I are having a baby girl in September, so this would kind of be a last hurrah for me. I know my coin buying budget will drop considerably after September.

After your recent horror story with damaged old gold from Heritage I am a little surprised you're wading into the water again.

Regardless, I'm with the majority here. I'd stay away from this one.

    Lance,

Heritage took care of their error in that situation. I am considering a few of them, but just wanted everyones thoughts on this specific example as it was in my price range.

Great details, I agree those are adjustment marks on the head, the dig looks like a "test mark" where a merchant or some other person made sure the new looking coin was real gold before accepting, many many early coins have a little scratch or dig where this happens, some less fortunate than this one, some more fortunate in that the mark is less conspicuous.

The details are quite nice and now that I look around the periphery, I see that nice old orange red coloration that is popular. The central portions of both sides appear rather heavily wiped, nearly reaching levels one would describe as "burnished" which is one stop shy of "polished" AND there's the unfortunately placed adjustment marks (mint made or no, they're on the central obverse and are medium-obtrusive) and the dig, which would actually... ok string me up and flame me for saying it... the dig would actually be better off repaired.

The coin will always have a lot of value, to the right buyer, that is you if you can honestly say, "I like looking at this coin" and want to get to say, "I have one of the type"

Knowing your collecting habits with having lots of tough types like chain cents and others with issues (but most of us don't have one at all) it's your call, it's obvious you're willing to accept some imperfections and desire one of this date/type, I certainly know what you mean about last hurrahs, I'm still living off my last Big Buy Before Babies.

Good luck! Life is going to change for you forever... last thought... if you have mid = 4 figures to drop on a coin,
buy a real pretty one that when you show a picture, people go "wow" and "holy chit" and PM you wanting to buy it.
Think twice about one that makes collectors go, "oof" and "ouch" "what a shame, it's such a nice coin BUT.."
