"Coinstar" Question.... look what I found.........

DBSTrader2DBSTrader2 Posts: 3,498 ✭✭✭✭
I thought I recalled a thread earlier where someone stated that Coinstar or other coin machines reject silver coins due to their not weighing the same as current clad coinage. Does my memory serve me correctly?

The reason I ask is my good fortune today at my local bank's coin counting machine, of all places............. I dumped in my spare change (none of which was silver), and when I checked the rejects slot for the few fused or scratched pennies that fell out, there were also 2 silver Roosie's! Not mine! (at least not until THEN! image )

They were slightly-darkened 1962 & 1963D. My first silver in quite a while!

Any thoughts on this phenomenon?

No phenomenon. People are cashing in thos jars full of change out of necessity...STILL. I'd imagine many of those slots in CoinStar machines will produce silver 'rejects'.
    I'll come up with something.

Yes, I have found silver before, also early dated 1920's wheats etc, old foreign coins etc. I check the reject slot regularly and come up with finds about once a week or so.

Does anyone know whether silver is more likely to be rejected these days? Other than being dark-toned, there was nothing wrong surface-wise (like gunk or major dents/gouges) that would otherwise lead me to expect them to be rejected........image

The silver gets rejected due to the weight being off from clad coins.

True... weight differential causes rejects. I never find any though, because the store employees (where the Coinstar machine is located), check the reject bin every time they walk past. image Cheers, RickO
  • Excellent find! Personally I've never found anything in the reject slot. I've used it before and it reminds you about 5 different times to check the reject slot for coins while it's counting your change. I wish I had one of those models at my store that you guys get all these goodies in image

I found a 1981 25c in VF with a wad of gum stuck to it and crusted.
