Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig Triple Threads Cut Signature

Ruth Gehrig thread

Thoughts on this.

It looks as if the guy who got this in a box of cards keeps having his auctions taken down.

It also indicates that Topps bought a PSA/DNA cut for the card.

The thread is pretty long but I know there are a lot of auto guys here and would like to see some opinions.

  • I have been saying the Ruth is fake since the card was pulled.Topps never stated they purchased a PSA/DNA cut.

According to the seller in the thread Topps sent him the info on the cut used, it may not have been bought as PSA/DNA originally but had been slabbed at some point. Again this is if the seller/poster are stating facts.

Even if PSA DNA says it is real or fake it doesn't really matter because you will never know unless you go back in time to watch him sign that piece of paper. My signature changes slightly all the time. If I became famous (fat chance) PSA would say half of my signatures are forged. How can anyone today really tell if something signed 80 years ago is real? you can't. They can offer opinions but other than that you will never know. The owner of the card of course will say it is real and all others who are jealous and want that card in their possession will say it is fake.

Well, I just wasted about an hour of my life reading that worthless thread. Who cares if it's authenticated? Does everyone get there autographed cards authenticated after they are pulled? If I pull a Chone Figgins auto'd card numbered to 2500 should I get it authenticated? Is it fake until PSA says it's real? It is obviously worthless unless some guy in California gives his opinion on the matter.

Does the sig look fake? Yes.
    Is the sig fake? Probably.
Is there any way to know for certain? Nope.
Is there any reason to get so worked up? None what-so-ever.

There is no reason for the card to get pulled from ebay and there is no reason to get worked up over it. Even if the sig is fake he still has the right to sell it. He is not guaranteeing the autograph, Topps is. If he lists it again I will pay $100,000 for the card (if I had it) because I know that the signature is most likely fake and because Topps is guaranteeing a fake autograph they will reimburse my $100,000 and then some. It is a win/win for the buyer and a win/win for the seller so why doesn't everyone leave this guy alone!

For this very reason I do not put much stock in auto'd cards and memorabilia unless it is personally obtained and becomes sentimental at that point.

  • Nothing like buying a box of cards and pulling that!!!! image
  • I was wondering, when ruth was playing, was sigs something considered highly valued back then? What I mean is that if someone got a ruth auto back then, could he/she easily sell it for a profit or was it mostly just a none valuable hobby to get sigs back then.
    Thanks for your help everyone.
  • It is pretty clear that the cut auto is laid on top of the the PSA/DNA holder and it not encapsulated!!
