It is also against ebay policy to retract a bid for any reason other than an error in your bid price or if the seller changed the items description. 39 times in 6 months? I think the problem is with you. >>
If it's OK for a seller to end an auction 12 before an auction ends, why can't a bidder retract his bid if there are no other bids/bidders/interests in the coin? They're both testing the market by whatever means they have. Why not throw a bid out there to let others know you're interested. If there are no other bids after a couple of days, I say, yank the bid! There's no sense in buying OR selling if the market is not ready.

An eBay seller who makes a habit of ending auctions early is just as bad as a bidder who repeatedly retracts bids, and is also subject to being hit with a violation under the fee avoidance policy. In other words, it is NOT okay for a seller to do this either - ethically or under eBay policy.
However true that may be Russ, with the way ebay fees are, I believe alot of folks are always trying to find ways around them. I for one, haven't sold on ebay in years.

Good point. The way I look at it is there's a big difference between retracting a bid in a normal full duration auction, and retracting an offer on a buy it now with the make an offer option. When I make an offer on an item, I usually want to know that day or at least within 24 hours if my offer is going to be accepted. If there is no reply by then, I have absolutely no problem retracting my offer and moving on to something else. I do think that retracting a bid in a regular auction, especially after the bid had been placed a while ago, for the most part is just not cool. I as a seller has had this happen to me and I must say that it certainly did tick me off.

You can buy all the coins for whatever price you like but if you paid too much, is it better to answer that question before you buy or when you sell? Unless money is not a problem, don't worry about it. But the market value is usually determined by the supply and demand through bids by several bidders. And yes, many coins can be bought on the cheap but are they quality coins? It's very rare to see nicer coins given away to one bidder unless it's a reserve auction or BIN or that individual has a higher understanding of the market than everyone else, which would be very unlikely. If you're the only bidder in a reserve auction, do you believe you're getting a bargain? There are different types of auctions which would make a good topic.

Which ever way you decide to go ....Review the Ebay rules under A-Z regarding feedback. No need to be banned over being found in violation of abusing the feedback system. They may look at it as retalitory for him reporting you. I have swallowed my pride on a few occasions over the years as there have been some who can really manipulate the system in thier favor. Its not worth losing ebay privilages.

Leotheylyon, it is 100% unethical to bid on an item, then to retract the bid down the road based solely on the fact that you are the only bidder. If the seller has the coin out there, they are the supply, if you bid, you are the demand. With that bid you are saying " I am the demand for this coin at this price. I think it is worth "x amount". I will buy it here." You are assigning a value to that coin at the level you think it is worth. If you don't think the coin is worth that (or any item for that matter), what is the point in throwing in a bid anyway? Why not just wait until close to the end to throw in a bid after you've seen the market be established? If it is to "add" the coin to your watch list, please just add them to your watch list and please refrain from using a bid as a place holder.
I do not find the technique of placing a bid and then "looking around to see if anyone else follows you" and if not retracting your bid because you didn't happen to catch the right fad at the time to be a type of transaction that lives up to the standard of the people on this board. I have made bids that I wish I could have back. I have been the sole bid on an item that maybe I shouldn't have purchased, but I looked at the item, valued it, bid it and stood by my bid (like you should), whether down the road I wanted to or not.
I get quite a few retracted bids, I don't sweat them. I get the e-mail and don't even look to see who did it. I don't think they scare others off as it has become such a common occurrence. Not that I think it is right but I think there are better things to spend my energy on. --Jerry

Hello! You forgot to post your ebay user name.
But how's that to keep someone else from bidding for me? Not that I have ever came across anyone that had me blocked from bidding.
But it's very important to give up your ebay user name so I know who you are and not give you my business. And that goes for anyone else who thought they were cleverly blocking bidders from bidding in their auctions over the years. That's right! Give it up!

Sheeesh! What's with all this chest pumping? Getting in the last poke? Just give it up already, guys. Let it go. The OP did and now some of the rest should as well.
I messaged the seller and explained that feedback will NOT be a problem. If he (or she) wishes to cancel the transaction, I will follow. Lets go our separate ways... This way there will be no repercussions and "I have tried to right a wrong."

That's not it. A few put in very large bids to "out" a sellers reserve price on the coin. It is price manipulation.
