It's OK to ask directions in Numismatics.

Your thoughts...is there a "GPS" of numismatics ?

    ..........and what you are asking?

No. And that's part of the fun. You have to use a lot of different ways to attack a problem.

Good question but I don't have a good answer.
I think the key to succeeding in numismatics is different for everyone.

I have tried alot of different advice over the years.
I have bought from and sold to dealers. I have bought and sold through auctions.
I have bought and sold on the internet.

Numismatics and numismatists are constantly changing.
The type of items you collect and your price range has an influence over how you can do things.
    Personal preference plays a part.

The way I buy and sell has changed over the years.
I used to buy from a dealer and sell back to dealer generally losing 15 or 20%.
Then I started buying at auction and reselling on the internet.
Generally I do better that way but you still have to pay an auction house, shipping, etc.

Now that works for me but for people putting together a million dollar set it's probably not a good idea.
In the end I think you have to go with whatever makes you happy.
No matter what the experts or the GPS says.

    But is it really worthwhile?

What laws or beliefs is this GPS based on, and how accurate is it?

Of course. And any given answer will get you to within about 15 feet of the right one.

Of course it is ok to ask directions, where would any of us be otherwise? As far as a GPS, a well stocked library of coin books, covering everything from series to counterfeiting will serve most people very well. After that, it is research. The invention of the GPS did not stop exploration. Cheers, RickO
