I wonder if PCGS has thought about dropping their refusal to slab GSA silver dollars in their origin

Now that Don Willis has been on board a while, I wonder if PCGS has taken a second look at possibly slabbing (or creating a band or sticker around the GSA holder) original GSA. I realize that PCGS has long resisted doing so.

I believe this is a potentially a lucrative source of revenue for PCGS with minimal risk.

There are loads of NGC graded GSA silver dollars as well as ungraded ones that PCGS would pick up as new business.

There are so many collectors of GSA silver dollars that do not want to lose the history of the GSA slab/holder around the coin.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have no doubt they have given it consideration, however, have not read any analysis of their conclusions. Why not post it as a question for Don?? Cheers, RickO

I've also wondered about this for years. My conclusion is that perhaps either they don't like the NGC band approach but they don't have a better idea, and/or doing GSAs would create too much special handling and shipping hassles.
    When in doubt, don't.

If they could grade GSA dollars, and somehow "tag" the grade on the holder (perhaps just on the frosted edge) such that it does not have a somewhat obtrusive "band" like NGC, they would get a lot of business from me. I don't like how the NGC band covers the words "SILVER DOLLAR" on the GSA holders.

It would be nice if they could do the same thing on the Redfield/Paramount holders as well.

    Real simple,

Grade them just like they grade magazines or comic books, in one of those big hard cases.

I'm sure they have reviewed this, and determined it wasn't very lucrative. Especially since NGC has already graded a large number of them. In other words, they missed the boat.

I agree. I also think it is not too late for PCGS and I also think many if not most owners of the NGC banded GSA silver dollars would want to have their GSA slab encased in a PCGS comic book sized cases (maybe not quite THAT big).

I also think that PCGS could simply add a disclaimer that their grade is NOT guaranteed since they are not able to look (or scan) the coin since the GSA silver dollar cannot be cracked open at the customer's request.

Perhaps the comic book division of CLCT could get involved in this one as far as designing the case size? Certainly they would welcome the added business?
