Rim ding - thumbs up or thumbs down???

mbogomanmbogoman Posts: 5,250 ✭✭✭✭✭
Check out my 1807 half below. There is a rim issue between 3:00 and 4:00 on the obverse. What do you think? Is it egregious enough to knock it down to a Genuine slab? Or is it minor enough to pass? I'm trying to learn, here. FWIW, it is in the hands of the graders now. It used to reside in a PCI slab but the details seemed to merit a good shot at upgrading, so I cracked it out.

The rim bruise by itself might not keep it out of a graded holder, but combine it with the cleaning.... image

    What do you think?

The rim ding doesn't bother me that much.

If it makes it into PCGS plastic, I'd expect a net grade for the ding and the surfaces. However, I would wager the coin comes back Genuine.

Hoping I'm wrong & wishing you good luck...Mike

The photo is too bright - I apologize. It really does not look cleaned in hand. My concern was with the bump, but I guess I'll know soon enough!

The fact that it's a half might save it, bigger coins tend to pick up more marks like that, if it were a dime, absolutely it would go Genuine.

I think it's a 50-50 shot, best of luck to you!

In that case, if the bump is the only issue I could see it getting into a graded holder.

Looks like a fairly serious rim bruise. Probably won't grade.

Looks bad from obverse side. Doesn't look like much from the reverse side. What does the full on edge shot of the actual hit itself look like? Please post an image.

Probably dipped or cleaned ages ago and is retoning nicely... I think the rim hit gets into a genuine slab though...

You send that to NGC and get it into a prong holder where the rim thing will show....they will grade it.

To me that is not a bad rim ding for a coin that big.

Nice looking coin. I think it would grade.

The rim bump along would probably be OK.

However. the coin appears to have been over-dipped and is re-toning not so nicely -- has kind of an "AT" look. Probably a Genuine holder.

That being said, it certainly looks better than when it was white. Would be a nice example for a raw type set.

I don't get why a coin cannot grade for a ding. Seems like a heavy penalty to pay. Can someone explain why it's the case?
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

Looks better than my Bust half. I don't even own oneimage
I could live with the color, and the ding.
Color isn't horrible, afterall it's 203 years old.
Only the coin knows how the toning occurred.

I think it wont grade. It looks too severe.

Ok, I will assume the pics are not great per your previous post and the coin does not look cleaned in hand. Your question is about the rim bump. If the coin were any higher grade than it is, it would bother me. For this coin, I'm not too bothered.

The ding is bad enough in my opinion to keep it out of the holder, but combined with the lack of natural color and the coin has an uphill battle.

I like the coin and it would be a great type set coin. I tend to agree that the surfaces appear to of had a old cleaning I do like the color though.
I think more like then not the rim ding with result in a genuine slab.

The coin will not grade as your rim ding is the exact definition of a "rim dent" (code 95).

The differences in opinion are very telling. I appreciate all of your inputs. Basically, it's a crapshoot and that is pretty much what I expected. It was formerly in a PCI holder with a grade of F12 and may very well have been net graded. The coin is in the NGC graders hands now. I sent it to them instead of PCGS because if it doesn't grade, for re-saleability I prefer the "Details Grading" of NGC over the "Genuine" of PCGS.

Thanks again for all your comments!

The sharpness grade for this coin is VF-25. A large number 1807 half dollars were struck from shallow dies that had less detail than those half dollars from 1801 to 1805.

The big problems for this coin are the ring ding, the cleaning and the possible artificial toning. As such, this is more of an album coin than a slab coin. I don't think that it's worth sending in, but the owner has the last call.
