The "Big One" should have been "PCGS offers Conservation Services"

It would have been a real benefit to collectors and historians down the road.

38 posts in 8 years...and this is what you've been saving up for?

I keep my powder dry for the important things - BTW I was serious. It breaks my heart as much to see the all the coins ruined because they weren't conserved as much as it does to see all those ruined by improper cleaning.

Several years ago PCGS was planning to offer a conservation service. After considering the potential consequences of doing so they ultimately decided against it.

I would have preferred NET grading for "Gennie" holders, just to help collectors understand grading and problems together. A discounted XF for cleaning is better than a label that says it's "Genuine", leaving the coin in "LIMBO" for all intents and purposes. Not that a dealer or collector can't negotiate a price, but net grading would offer a valueable service.
Most of us (I hope) know it's authentic before we fill out the paperwork for submittal.

    End of Rant.

I understand the hazards, it sometimes surprises even the most experienced what lies underneath. The folks ATC not only seem to be able to make money at it, they are providing an extemely valuable service. It just seems a shame the number one company in the field could look at so many salvagable coins and turn a blind eye.

NCS has also ruined a lot of original coins in and rewarded owners of such coins with higher grades at NGC. So we now have a lot of dipped out crap in overgraded NGC "coffins".

Actually, if it's done very well (not like NCS), this an excellent idea. Goes along the lines of "if you can't beat'em, join'em".

Hmmmmm... there is a fine line between conserving and doctoring... perhaps we need a Professional Doctoring Service (PDS) - you heard it here first...image Cheers, RickO

This is true, although I may have seen a few coins that were improved by NCS, the vast majority look far worse and some have just been a downright shame following conversion services.

Yup. Thank God PCGS never slabs dipped coins.

I don't think that is the point. PCGS doesn't sell a service where they dip the coins to be entombed. although it seems that there have been a few along the way that were "corrected" for some deficiencies that developed after slabbing, they don't sell a whole service aimed at that result.

They do, but they will more likely ding you a grade for a dipped coin vs. an original coin rather than reward you like NCS/NGC does.

Would it be OK to dip slabbed coins?
