Why do some members of this message board...

...feel it is ok to criticize other members' coins or the way they collect...without ever posting a coin from your own collection?
It seems like some choose to sit back and pass judgment on others, and yet are unwilling to put themselves out there for the same judgment and scrutiny.
Certainly, everyone is free to post what they want on here (within the rules set by PCGS). But this seems a bit shallow to me.
Collect what you like.
Like what you collect.
Enjoy the hobby the way you want to.
Let others enjoy the hobby the way they want to.
This isn't hard.

Sometimes the excuse is "I can't take pictures", etc etc etc. But, if someone buys a coin from almost anywhere online, there is usually some type of picture already existing to us.
Or the "I don't know how to post a picture"....but, there are plenty of members who would help in posting the picture (I've done it for more than a few folks and I know others have a swell).
I certainly agree with the "collect what you like and enjoy the hobby as you want while letting others enjoy is their way".....now, that said, you need to start collecting some moderns
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I don't think that you necessarily remain anonymous to everyone.
When dealing in a purist hobby where coins are measured against perfection. There will be common attitudes of: “what I have is better than what you have”. There will always be those who enthusiastically tell you why is NOT a grade rather than why it IS a grade.
<< <i>When someone posts a pic of a coin and asks for our opinion, should we tell him the truth or just keep our mouths shut? >>
If someone asks for opinions about a coin they post, give them your opinion. Advice and assistance from more experienced collectors is one of the main benefits of this board. But there are a number of ways you can handle this.
Criticize the coin if necessary. But do so by providing pointers and specific details about the coin that you don't like. Then compare their coin with one from your own collection (or from someone else's collection, or from an online dealer's website, or whatever) that illustrates the point you are making.
Or you could give them your opinion via PM.
But my main point is this: If any of you feel compelled to respond to such threads and give your opinion about a coin, why aren't you willing to post your own coins for others to give their opinions?
And if any of you feel compelled to criticize the way others collect - slabbed vs. raw, modern vs. classic, CAC vs. plus, your own grading vs. a TPG, whatever - why aren't you willing to show us your coins and show us definitively why your way is better?

I believe that some forum members, especially the large crop of newbies with less than five years in the hobby, often benefit from having their new purchases examined with a critical eye. While pointless bashing is never appreciated, pointing out certain details, or offering helpful suggestions, are often a useful learning exercise for all involved. That said, some tact is appreciated when criticism is offered. Unfortunately, some folks lack that social skill, and some folks are flat out jerks and just don't care.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>I think the op is way off base myself. If someone post a coin that invites opinions to be expressed that is the point of such a post most of the time. When a post is made to a forum one has to understand you will get responses of all types be that right or wrong in some ones perception. >>
I think what he is saying is just be nice when you are telling them that the coin is not as good or nice as "you" may think it is. We are "Collectors" and we like it all. Lets not lose sight of that.

Amen to that MJ.
I for one have really benefited from frank commentary about purchases I have posted.
I don't hang around a coin shop and I don't have a mentor. The board members here are a dependable resource to help flatten out my learning curve and further my appreciation for coins.

I know if I ask and post, I actually hope to hear from others. Even after 20 something years, I like to get feedback.
Critical feedback, yes I appreciate it, if it's presented in a somewhat constructive manner. Sometimes I still learn some new tricks (actually, I learn a lot of things from this board).
Positive feedback, yes I appreciate it too, but it's also nice to know the thoughts behind that. It helps to know why (either way).
Do I like the almost pathological "negative nellies" ... who as noted, rarely if ever post anything of their own? Nah.
But if I walked into a bar to have a beer, I probably wouldn't like them there either.
Some of you I've grown to like enough and respect enough though, that I'd find your table and buy you one.

I believe in telling the truth no matter how much it might hurt so we all can learn and hopefully make a lot less errors. Who wouldn't want this method and outcome to take place, I thought that was why these great boards existed. if I wanted to be bsed and stroked I could visit the dealer's table that I purchased said coins from every day of the week.
Agree, but apparently when some forum members post pics of their new pride and joy and they ask for everyone's opinion, they get argumentative when they get anything less than praise of their coin.

I would say that my level of candor, for a coin that I do not approve, is proportional to how well I know the poster and how well I know the series. For example, I do not mind sticking it to Realone if he screws up
For the general board inquiries, I tend to be more plain vanilla in my responses. Besides, who am I to impose my standards on someone I do not know?

And I appreciate that, I want to know the facts, or the truth straight up and handed to me ! I also don't mind when the guess the grades guesses are wide as the straight of Magellan. First know one should ever assume the coin that I will post is an ms example, and if I have a ms example because either I believed it was or it happened to be in that holder I want to know what the learned and unlearend members think of it because as we all know the TPG's screw up and trust me so do I. And that is why this forum is so valuable as a learning tool in numismatics, hopefully I will graduate someday. Now when it comes to Ricko and his opinions on my collection, I like it to because he offers a valid and opposite perspective believed my many learned and experienced collectors that I believe I need to hear in order to keep fresh and balanced. So please guys keep it flying I promise not to duck
Just in the last couple days, someone posted a coin in my area of interest that looked so-so from the images. It was someone I do not know well, but he/she was obviously very excited about the coin. I could have easily dissected the coin, mind you, from the images, but instead I said, "Nice coin, nice pickup" and moved on.

I don't know where the rat came from and I've never seen anyone else use it as an avatar. But I did select it from the big group of available avatars under Profile.
I like him and I'm gonna keep using him a while.
I agree. I also don't know how to use a camera.

This is where we are failing to help the newer collectors. Instead of a total dissection of the coin just point out a glaring defect that the coin has in a very gentle way. If the owner responds to your gentle observation then go a little deeper with the dissection. If the owner gets defensive or does not say anything then move on seems to be the best option. Nice coin, nice pickup for a dog coin gives the impression to the owner that he/she is progressing well within the hobby.

OK, I confess. But that picture was taken 9 years ago, I have not taken a dozen pictures since, and I have never shot a coin!
BTW, for those of you that don't visit the Darkside, I do occasionally post images of coins I've purchased for my collection, but the images are always stolen from auction sites.

Having said that, I personally don't take very seriously the comments made by posters who have never given the board any reason to believe that they actually know what they are talking about.
