I guess the tannic acid is what reacted with the silver. Is leather ever used to AT coins? Obviously, you wouldn't want to leave it in contact with the leather for too long.

My grandfather used to keep a coin in his wallet. I can't remember what kind of coin it was because I was so young, but I remember it was very dark. Cool.
I am assuming this one spent a good 80+ years in one. It recently was found in one and judging by the condition it was probably placed there soon after being made
Back then....Soooooo many different ways that they tanned leather. Just about all of them I know of involve an array of nasty chemicals. Living around a 'Tannery'. Phew.
I sometimes like this look. Especially nice effect on your peace dollar. I've seen a few gold coins with quite a brown varnish on them too. Might be leather pouch storage that does that.
Coins stored in leather billfolds need to be flipped and rotated every month. In about a year, the toning should be very obvious, but probably not too dark. I really do not recommend this method of speeding up the toning process. The grading services now even refuse to grade coins toned in the old paper envelopes, toned over many years. It seems the grading services now do not much like any kind of secondary toning, what normally happens after a coin is dipped.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

<< <i>I like it. Very different, but I like it. I think this one may have been kept in a similar fashion.
I think that is a pretty nice coin

Stored in a leather pouch for decades.
