I've never owned Charlotte gold...

...but I've itched for something for a while.

Budgets being what they are, I had to settle. But I like it.

There's something about early gold and early copper that's so alluring.

Circulated 5 dollar gold piece! What's not to like? Congratulations, Lance.

    lkeigwin,
Nice piece. I agree there is something about those early golds and early coppers that you just can't put your finger on. But every time Ambro or others post an older gold piece for example, there is a part of me that wishes I had "that" coin. Maybe soon (if budget allows).

Nice coin, did they 92 or 98 it? I like it no matter what they call it. I would love to have a 1838-1840 date& mintmark set of 5 dollar gold. 9 coins, 3 different types

VF30. I guess PCGS is pretty forgiving with old gold.

    Thanks for the nice words!

Nice looking coin. The first year of issue and the only year with the obverse mintmark. Very historical coin with honest wear. You did well.image

Great looking old gold, i don't think you 'settled' at all, there's something very appealing about worn, rare gold coins.

Its not PCGS its the market, People are so ravenous for southern gold that MA has its own meaning for the type esp for the one offs like 38,39,61. Although IMO the color is a little lighter then it should be I would be proud of that coin if I were you, Know I would be. Here is a link to one of its brothers that I think has a color look more inline with being old not counting the different trace elements that give it that different southern look.

Yeh, hey I like it! My Only thought....is that an old piece like this should show some 'dirt and muck' inside the denticles....around the details of the reverse, this coin is very very clean. Id say with 60 percent of other old gold...its been helped somehow along times long path. But, hey who knows. RYK would be the one to ask.

If you have Winters book on Charlotte gold, you know the following, if you do, then this is for anyone else who dosent have that book.

    1839 C

    mintage 17205

    rarity ranking, 9th of 24

This is a one year type, the head is different and has the obverse mintmark Several details including the hair curls are differnt from the 1840.

For collectors who specialize in Charlotte Gold the 1839 C is an essential issue, and this has driven up demand.

Coloration; a distinct green gold or or medium orange gold color can be found on undipped examples. the majority of the surviving 1839 C half eagles have been brightened and as a result, no longer show original hues

The Base of E in LIBERTY shows doubling in higher grade examples

As of june 2009 pcgs had graded a total of seven in unciruclated, Ngs has graded 12 in uncirculated these figures are inflated by resubmissions

    Total Known, 150-200

    by Grade

    vf 75-110
    xf 35-50
    au 22-30
    unc 8-10

For more info...buy the book but it IS also to be found online for free if you search it

Hey again a great buy you can see from this info you got an important one year variety, and a sought after date with a low survivor number

What I like best about your coin, and a real positive in eye appeal for me, LOUPE eye appeal, is that the cheek has no detracting nicks or scratches.

Nice representative of a very tough date, Lance. The '39-C frequently comes with choppy surfaces. The area around Charlotte was hungry for coinage and Charlotte product did what it was made to do... circulate, and circulate hard... especially during the early years. This is a nice coin for the grade, no question about it. Hard to comment on originality without seeing the coin in hand, so I'll withhold on that. All said, it's a very nice '39-C. Congrats!
