Post Your Broder!

Hi - I just picked up a card and learned it was called a "Broder" card. It's a pretty neat card and did some research and learned that there are many different ones from the late 80s out there. I don't have a photobucket account but would love to see some of the other members post their Broders. Just curious if there is a checklist of all (or at least partial list) of Broder sets out there? Thanks and look to forward to seeing others!

People went nuts after Broders when they first came out, and then demand and pricing went south once they were classified as unlicensed cards.

if any has the "No caine" Bo Jackson I would be very interested in them
  • Thanks the sales sheet is cool..were all of them first sold off a sales sheet or did they just randomly appear on the market?

  • This is a nice example of unlicensed cards. They are a good reflection of the "Bo mania" that was present during the time. Also the other guys - Jordan and Will Clark were popular ...

I really like the real Rob Broder cards like the Ripken that Swartz posted. They had great photography and were unique with their rounded edges. I believe these peaked around the 1986-88 time frame although it is my understanding that Rob Broder had been creating his unlicensed cards using his own photography since the 70's.

Then around 89-90 the unlicensed card thing really took off and everyone and their brother started printing the quirky and lower quality stuff like Barf posted. I do like the creative ones like the Will Clark USA version and I distinctly remember the weekend those fake Bo Jackson minor league cards hit. Everyone was trying to pass them off as legit.

Here's a sealed Broder 1987 rookies set I picked up off eBay

Here are some more Ripkens - not sure if they are all "Broders" or not, but similar - gotta love the "Ripkin".

  • Yep, those are Broder types. The Ripkin is kinda funny... Thanks for all the posts. Enjoying them and hope to see some more.

Not sure where the term started but somewhere along the way Broder became a generic term for these unlicensed cards/sets even though there was actual Broder cards as has been posted here

As far as lower quality stuff, well I can say for certainty that the Bo 90 and the set with purple, blue & white borders are far from being low quality. High gloss on really nice card stock with excellent color/printing. Though they are probably not the norm as I agree that many were just low quality garbage.

    Edited: For spelling.

I've got a few Kirby cards with black borders that I've heard called Broders cards. I'll have to scan and post them to see if anyone else has something similar...

And this one is a fine example of low quality with images borrowed from other unlicensed cards.

Not sure where the Bo image is from.

I bought dozens, maybe hundreds of Nolan Ryan broder cards back around 89-91.

I threw them all out a few years ago
  • That's a cool 86 fleer replica jordan...do you guys know where I could find some Eric Davis Broders from that era? I picked up a couple recently but would like to find more.

  • I ran across your post as I was doing research for a project I'm working on where I try and catalog all of the "Broder"/unlicensed sets as well as all of the magazine inserts. I'm only cataloguing the multi-players sets and avoiding the single "Broders" or individual player set "Broders", especially anything with a player dressed up like Superman!

I'm also planning on including licensed sets that may not be cataloged, game cards like Strat-O-Matic, Replay Games, Statis Pro, etc, and oddball variations. The format is going to be an Excel spreadsheet with the following fields (Team, Year, Player, Card Description, Nationality, Link to Sample) to allow sorting, filtering, etc. Clicking on the link will take you to a sample card from the set with front/back views (you can see some samples below). I think it will be a nice resource for all of the super player/team collectors. If anyone on these boards is interested when the catalog becomes available, just send an email to tpeichel34@yahoo.com.

Pretty stupid attempt at humor considering the name isn't even the same spelling. image

  • Maybe you need to say it with a Canadian accent?

Not sure where I was searching, but when I searched on the term "Broder" it asked, "Do you mean Brodeur?"

Well I just did a Google search for Broder, Broder cards and Broder sports cards and not once did it ask "did I mean". And for good measure did an eBay search for Broder and it brings up 269 results and asks if I mean border. Would be interesting in a weird sort of way to know what search engine you used?

I look forward to seeing what you are able to come up with. I have considered putting together a generic website or blog about Broder's because there just isn't much info online about them.

  • Up to around 125 different "Broder" sets and I know there alot more. I just refuse to pay $25 to acquire a set so I can catalog it. I'll just have to be patient. I'm going to work on the sets I have that are complete then try and see if I can complete my partials.

  • I'd be interested in knowing if any of the cards you posted were not included on this list.

    Thanks,
    Tim

On an interesting sidenote, Davis had way more cards than Larkin. Larkin ended up having the better career, but in the late 80s, Davis was a monster.
