Circulated ICG graded coins. Info please. Lesson learned coin was cleaned.

Thru the last few years I have drank a ocean full of "PCGS Kool-Aid" so when it comes to how other TPG's grade I have no clue. Today I bought a dime, on ebay, that I have been looking for at a decent price for close to 5 years. Its in a ICG slab graded at AU53. Are they pretty much on the money with their AU grades? Will I be happy or disappointed?

UPDATE: Finally received the coin today and could tell it was going back before it was completely out of the bubble mailer. The coin was cleaned and appeared to be run over by a truck. Seller did not ship untill a week after the coin was paid for. All in all a not pleasant transaction. Back to sipping PCGS Kool-Aid for me. Never again will a ICG slabbed coin be purchased without seeing it in hand.

Please help......Does anyone have a 1927S Mercury dime in strict AU55 or AU58. Contact me if you do.

Thanks Much.
Ken

Ken, I will not bash ...

I have picked up a few (maybe six) over the last few years (AU55/58 MS/61/2) that were spot on. I believe they would grade the same or within a point.

However ... I sent one or two back and had to eat one that both should have been in cleaned holders (IMO). I broke the one I ate out and put it in an album. Maybe someday it will recover a bit.

I've seen plenty of decent coins in ICG slabs...if the pics in the auction looked okay you'll probably be fine

If it's the 1927-S that ended today, the details look pretty good from what I can tell...but the sellers photos aren't very good to get an accurate grade from.

Some ICG graded coins will cross at grade to PCGS, some at a slightly lower grade, not unlike NGC. ICG does tend to grade cleaned coins, coins that PCGS and NGC will reject for grading, so no crossover at any grade.

You have me nailed. It was the 27S with bad photos. Thanks to all for the answers. Mostly good but the cleaned comments concern me. We will see in a week or less.

The only problem I've encountered with ICG and the AU grades is many have been (lightly) cleaned/dipped. Most of those would probably make it into PCGS holders, for sure, but some wouldn't.

If the coin has its original skin than ICG is spot on with the high circulated grades.

I personally never had a problem with ICG in the circulated grades. It's in the higher MS and PR grades that I ran into problems (i.e. them being too liberal).
