Ike Error NEWP DDO and Strike Through... with a question on pricing!! Needs some help all you IKE

Tdec1000Tdec1000 Posts: 3,852 ✭✭✭
This is a newp from a dealer friend of mine. I believe it is a struck through wire example. Has anyone ever seen one like it? Should I get it graded and would it be worth the cost? Or should I just sell it like it is?

Nice strike thru. I do not get my error coin certified because they are what they are and I do not need a second opinion. Mint error cost extra to certify. I would sell as is. Pricing on errors is very subjective. My guess at that one is $40 - $80, which is just a guess, Good Luck and nice coin.

I have a 1978 P Ike that is struck thru string on the reverse. I think that it would probably grade 64 but I am not sure that The $50 error service plus the shipping costs would make it worth it. 19Lyds is the one that would most likely be able to give you the best answer.

Keep it as a novelty or sell it as a struck through... do not waste money on it. Cheers, RickO

My thought is that it's struck thru a piece of
'shaving', a thin wire-like strip from a finned
rim, or some other source of coining metal.

Struck Thru a Wire, in most cases, would leave
    a deeper, thicker impression.

Just my thoughts viewing the scan.....

Fred, thanks for your assessment on the coin. What is your opinion on having it graded vs selling raw in this case?

Unless you want to keep it in your collection,
and all of your other coins are 'slabbed', I
wouldn't spend the money on this piece.

It's easily seen - and if you want to sell it,
on Ebay, for example, most bidders wouldn't
need it certified, nor would you get back
your fees in a higher bid/price realized, imo.

Fred's the Man on this stuff as I know very little about prices for this type of error.

It's very cool to come across these but its also a highly specialized market. Personally, I wouldn;t expect more than $20 or so, but then, I've been wrong before.

BTW, straight Mint Error's are $50 a pop plus to/from shipping.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

For some reason, these types of "Reverse Struck Thru"
    image

As well as "Reverse Struck Thru Reeding Fragment"
    image

For the Ike Dollar Series, are most prevalent on the Bicentennial Ikes. It must have something to do with the switching
to the new Reverse Design? image
These types of errors are just not as easily found in the "normal" Eagle Reverse of the other Ike Dollar years. Errors
can be expensive to slab but can bring good premiums in higher grades.

    Happy Hunting!
