I Am Not Buying Anything This Week

That lasted until noon today and these were at the B&M. I couldn't take a chance that they would still be there tomorrow.

Not one but two Englehard 10oz that are a type that are not listed on AboutAG's sight. Not only that but consecutive low serial numbers.

And I couldn't leave this one behind

Anyone know what the MFR on the 5oz is for?

Wow, those are super cool. I haven't seen them before either.

Lowest serial number I have ever seen on any Engelhard anywhere! My best guess is that these bars belonged to a former Engelhard employee, which might better explain the consec numbers. Also, I vaguely remember reading about Engelhard offering early run production bars (low numbers) to its employees before selling them on the open market. Very cool find, and maybe a contender for pick up of the month!

What difference does a low serial number make?

They put an extra ounce of silver in the bars with low serial numbers.image

Wow...in answer to the low serial number...they make MY heart pound. VERY cool...and I'm only a newbie to bullion collecting (so I guess you could say I don't know any better!).

The low S/Ns would require a premium if I were ever to sell those...I'd try to verify what the low numbers meant, and if, by chance, these were some of Engelhard's first bars...wow! That would be too cool to own a piece of history like that...part of the first 100 bars they ever poured. THAT transcends bullion and jumps into history, validating a "collectible" status, at least IMHO.

And to be totally self-serving: Let me know if you ever want to unload!!image

From a purely bullion standpoint, none whatsoever. From a collectible standpoint, it is significant.

I wouldn't have taken that chance either! Those 10oz'ers are really, really cool. The low serial numbers obscure something else -- they have 7-digit serial numbers! I don't recall having seen 7-digit serial numbers on any other Engelhard bars (there are lots with a letter followed by 6 digits, but the 7-digit variety is new to me). It makes you wonder why they switched to 5 or 6 digits (as those clearly weren't made after the 5- and 6-digit ones). And, the "T.OZ" is unusual, too (Engelhard normally abbreviates it "TR.OZ" (we did see a 5-oz with "T.OZ"). This one seems to be very similar to the 5-ounce one that we have ("5-Digit, 'Fine Silver' line"), just 7 digits instead of 5.

Not one but two Englehard 10oz that are a type that are not listed on AboutAG's sight. Not only that but consecutive low serial numbers.

Would you mind if we used the picture on our site for the 10oz page?

The only thing I can think of is that it is someone's initials. I can't recall having seen others with letters like that on there, and it would fit in with the 10-ounce bars that may have been given to Engelhard employees (I.E. some employees were given bars with their initials imprinted at the time of the pour).

In any case, if I were you, I wouldn't even think of selling these except as a last resort (unless, of course, you want to sell them to me! <G&gtimage.

It's the About.Ag Website. We have some pages on Engelhard bars (and now a page on Johnson Matthey bars, that likely will get split up into several pages).

Great snag!! Could MFR possibly refer to manufacturer?

That's something we're hoping to do at some point. I believe Engelhard doesn't have a lot out there (the various dates/sizes of the prospectors come to mind), but I think JM may have a lot.
