Will Secure Plus mean the demise of a lot of Rattlers?

I love the rattler holders and with the general opinion that rattler's are to the conservative side of the grading scale, do you think a lot of these will be going in for regrade?

    Most rattlers have already been destroyed by their owners looking for a higher grade.

    No, few will be sent in for regrade. What's left of the rattlers is mostly properly graded and overgraded coins. Most of the upgrades have already been made.

    Yeah, probably. But I wouldn't send in my rattlers for Secure Plus (if I owned any). The stability of the coin in the old slab adds value, especially for copper. And I think the allure of the possibility of an upgrade for a rattler coin can often mean it will sell for more.

    Obviously, time will tell as comparisons are made between Rattlers, OGHs, and Secure Plus coins.

    The allure of the "Rattler" is that the coin it contains is undergraded by a least 1 grade point. If that is so, why would someone send it in for a half grade bump. image

    I personally have not been a fan of the Rattler. They do not stack nicely and rattle in the standard boxes, too.

    I have killed some Rattlers moving coins into more contemporary holders and currently own none.

    But my "Yeah, probably" was in response to the OP's question "...do you think a lot of these will be going in for regrade?" I cannot be responsible for the ignorance of others or the actions of those who are not as smart as me!

    (Note - the above post is made with tongue firmly in cheek. I'm not quite that arrogant! image )

    No, because of the CAC alternative, you get the football on the original holder. I doubt many want to lose the holder for the Secure + holder.

    I agree with you and once submitted or cracked the rattler can never come back. Plus there can be something special owning a coin in a rattler or OGH as it shows the coin was certified in the "early days". That at least to me has some interest especially with rainbow toners.

    Agree. Rattlers have collector value beyond the value of just the coin.

    The reason for the OP was that I have a 1915 Buffalo that is in a MS 65 rattler slab. I paid 66 money for it several years ago and truely feel it would go 66. But, I'm of the same opinion as many of you and just hate to lose that holder. I don't plan on selling it, and I hope not to kick the bucket any time soon, (note to self, watch out for speeding buses and stray bullets) so I've backed off that coin as an option and the rattler holder will live to see many more days/years. I think my CC Special will be a nice 32D Washington that I've had in a Dansco for quite a while. Thanks again to all for helping me to not screw up!

    If it makes you feel better, you always could try for a gold cac sticker. If it were my coin, I'd leave it just the way it is. You're not planning to sell it any time soon and who knows how grading standards will change in the future?

    I will keep my OGH's.... I like the coins and I am not a grade hunter. Never cracked one yet. Cheers, RickO
