1933-S Walking Liberty Half - Squished S variety, ever heard of it?

I doubt it because I just made up that name. I have a certified half here with a very interesting mint mark. Is this a well known variety? Does anybody know how it came to be?

I have never seen nor heard of that variety... but then, I am not much of a variety collector. I do like Walkers though, and do not recall that condition. Cheers, RickO

Thanks for the reply ricko. I've never seen anything like it either. It is like 4 filled S mintmarks piled on top of each other. The mint mark is lower in height than the rock ledge so it seems the design would protect the mint mark from actually getting squished by accident.

There are NO known varieties of the 33-s based on the FOX book...

Being intimately familiar with the coin- My notes say.. "Something going on with the mm. Most likely PMD but no damage to area around mm so could be ejection damage..."

You can check with Walkerguy21d because that is who I got the coin from....

Great picture....but I have no idea what caused the distortion of the S to that extent. I was thinking that I had now seen two coins with this feature, but apparently it's deja vu'....
Since it's certified I guess at least you can be sure it's not a poorly added S
