I'm helping a friend of a friend with some 1800s gold...UPDATED with Grades

Hi Y'all

I'm out of element on a couple of pieces, was hoping someone could give me gray sheet on these two:

1857 $3 Gold, seems to me to be XF45, raw....some research said this is one of the more commonly counterfeited years, so is it even worth sending to pcgs?

1898 $5 Gold, seems to me to be maybe an AU50.

Also, I don't know how to tell if they have been improperly cleaned, maybe a look at the pictures?

Any help appreciated. Many Thanks

FloridaBill

They both are real and I agree with your grades.

I think it would be worth sending them to pcgs even if they get a genuine holder just so in the future there is no question if they are real or not.

They are both worth slabbing and, unless your pics are hidding something that I can't see, they should both grade.

First they appear to be real they look right in every respect. To sell gold of that era it needs to be in a legitimate slab. My strong advice is to send them to PCGS and get them in a slab as already said even a "GENUINE " no grade designated slab is much better then selling or buying them raw.

Gold of this era has a lot of very good fakes the 3 dollar especially.

  • Sending the $3 in as the quarterly special, with secure plus....I'll post grades when received

    Again, thanks everyone!

  • Thanks everyone for your help. The $3 was sent in on the quarterly special, and came back in a Secure Plus holder graded VF45+. The $5, in a regular holder, made an AU53. Thanks again....

There is no "VF45+" grade. Did you mean "XF45+"?
