Has anyone ever seen a genuine Trade Dollar with rims like this one?

Based on those photos, I'm surprised it graded by PCGS. Maybe it's in a counterfeit holder? Certainly looks cleaned, among other things.

What do you see that indicates cleaned?

It's not in the Heritage archives, and the cert # checks out.

Is it a rim issue or is the gasket deformed?
  • kazkaz Posts: 9,256 ✭✭✭✭✭
That's a good question. I just messaged the seller about that.

That is part of the plastic of the holder. I have seen this several times before.

Well, judging by the few Trade Dollars I have, the rims should be roughly twice as wide as the denticles. So, looking at the one posted here, there appears to be something definitely fishy about the rims on it.

Personally, I wouldn't want anything to do with this one.

I saw that one on E-bay and wondered about the rim and the stains or corrosion on the reverse.Let us know what the seller says about the rims.

Looks like a minor rim cud. The feature appears occasionally in the Morgan Dollar series, less so in the Trade Dollar series. Look at the rim of this 1880 VAM 39A, counterclockwise from star 1 to star 13. Same feature, most notable below the date.

The black spots on the reverse, clinging to the lettering and devices; to me, it appears that the whole coin was dark at one point, and some of the crud was removed. JMHO, of course. I'm wrong a lot. image

My guess is it's ok, some rim cuds and ugly spots.

But I'm not a trade dollar expert image

There's nothing wrong w/ that coin. Many trade dollars were smuggled out of Communist China mixed w/ tar as the ballast in Chinese Junks - that may be the remnants showing as discoloration

You see nothing wrong with chunks of tar on a coin? Interesting.

It's part of the series charm although I question just how many came out on junks as most that I have heard about came back with dealers in the 60s and 70s, besides how far can a Junk sail. I too think it's a nice type coin that was net graded down from AU58 due to the stains. I also think GoldenEyeNumismatics is right ant the Obv die was just towards the edge of its service life.

The die was definetely deteriorating and thus the metal flow filled the gaps, creating small cuds. That is a very nice coin and for a person putting together a chop marked set it would be a nice addition.

thanks for the informative input, folks. here's the seller's reply: "Hi, thank you for your question. I just checked the coin for you. Yes, the 'rolled over' look is the coin itself. I consider it is a common phenomenon on the edge of 1875 Trade dollar. I remember I sold a 1875 CC PCGS MS62 last year which also has this phenomenon."

I pm'd him back on eBay of the comments about the dies/rim cud issues mentioned here. I definitely learned something, thanks!

Well, I bid on it, won it, and after applying eBay Bucks have a pretty neat coin for a reasonable price. It has a lot of luster, the cuds are nice and there are die cracks almost all the way around the reverse. No corrosion, just the mysterious black gunk, which I would like to believe is nautical tar. whoever chopped it placed their punches pretty carefully!

    congrats KAZ, Great coin.

Thanks, guys. I think the black stuff is (maybe) old folder residue. Otherwise, I think there should be some on the obv. I wish the holder didn't totally obsure the edge, I'd like to see what's going on with those cuds a little better. Maybe I should have it changed to an Edgeview?image
