For those that specialize...

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,550 ✭✭✭✭✭
Most of us love all types of coins...even those of us who specialize in a specific coin or area. For those of you who specialize, are there any other specific coins that you have or would like to have in your collection that are far outside of your specialty...that just don't or wouldn't fit with the rest? If so, what are they and why?

As most know, I collect colonials. But I would add the following coins to my collection even though they don't fit at all with the rest:

1955 DDO Lincoln Cent (wanted one since I was a child)
1937-D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel (ditto)
1878-CC Morgan Dollar (grandparents gave me one when I was young to start my collection)
1926-S Peace Dollar (ditto)

I collect all types of US type coins, but my particular area of interest is Barbers and Liberty nickels. But I'd love to have a $20 Saint Gaudens, because (a) they are gold (b) and I love the design.

I collect error coins only, however, I like to view patterns but never bought one. I can't name a specific pattern, but one day I'll get a nice one.

I like everything, Bust coins are my true passion, but I also have:

3-legs (not that I personally have three legs, just the 1937 d nickel)
    Svdb Linc
    42/41 dime

That may be it for the oddities.

I bought a really high grade steel cent just cause it was so shiny and I always liked them since I was a kid.

My main focus is on Mercury Dimes. With that said, I also have a complete set of State Quarters, Presidential Dollars, 1919-1947 Mexico Dos Pesos, and a complete type set 1950 to date. Additionally I have a few other incomplete sets such as a very nice start on my Buffalo nickels. I have tried and tried to build other sets, but every time I am at a coin show (as a collector) I wind up searching through all the Mercury Dimes. I do love everything and many years ago I was a set builder and had every cent from 1857 to somewhere about 1980 (only missing 1877), a complete set of 2 cent pieces, Complete set of Buffalo nickles, complete set of Jefferson's up to that 1980ish date, complete set of Washington's, complete set of Franklin's, complete set of Kennedy's (again up to the magic 1980ish, complete set of Peace, and complete set of Ike's. Also many partial sets including Barber dime, quarters, and halves, partial set of Liberty nickels, and probably some other stuff. I kept the 1937-D 3-leg and my 1921-D Walking halve because they were gifts from my wife Linda.

Now, there is one coin I will buy someday and that is an 1877 Indian cent just so I can say I had one of everything.

I would love to have examples of the following, far outside my specialty

    Libertas Medal
    Chain Cent
    Confederate Cent
a piece of large, ancient, gold (greek)
    $50 octagonal slug

As most around here know I specialize in bust half dollars. I also, however, own at least one example of all the weird denominations...half cent, two cent, trime (silver only), half dime, and twenty center. One of these days I need to pick up a nickel three center.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

A bar cent and a chain cent.... for some reason they capture my imagination and sense of history. I will get them someday... either buy them or find them metal detecting old foundations. Cheers, RickO

I have had several specialties and, as a result, have detritus image from all of these in my current collection.

Coincidentally, like the OP, I have a circ 78-CC Morgan that was given to me by my grandmother.

The vast majority of my collection is modern crap in Dansco albums but damned if those Wiener Medals just jump out at me every time. They are gorgeous pieces of art.
