I'm happy you got your collection back. And while I'm not defending law enforcement, I suspect they are overwhelmed with murder, gang violence, drugs, etc that cases like yours are small potatoes and probably get assigned to young, inexperienced and/or incompetent officers. I share your sentiments about the direction our country is going....but look on the bright side---Charlie Rangel and Turbo Tax Timmy Geithner say its OK to cheat on your taxes........BTW your incident prompted me to buy an insurance policy with Collectible Insurance Services of Hunt Valley, MD. Hopefully I'll at least get reimbursed if tragedy strikes.
<< <i>Thanks Calaban, another point, I tried to go the FBI route because of the size of the collection. I found out that the internet/interstate department will only handle cases of 1 million or more dollar value...I could have lied but told them my collection was a bit south. It took the police over 3 months to get the cell phone records of the first suspect, and the attending officer - a nice enough young lady didn't even try to find the point of entry (my neighbor who is a former cop found it). The CSI investigator did nothing but splash the fingerprint ink powder all over my home (ruined my carpet and forced me to repaint many of my shelves and doorways). The private investigator I hired initially was a waste of 2.5K dollars, that would have been better spent at the bunnyfarm north or Vegas. If I went the law enforcement route there was a very good chance they would bungle it (i.e. Natalie Holloway and the underpants bomber). Sorry to be so cynical but this experience was quite eye-opening and nothing you see on TV maps reality. I would like nothing more than to mete out street justice on the guy who stole my collection (in Nigeria he would be wrapped in tires and burned in the streets), but I gave my word so it is done. Just be sure to photograph and videotape your collection if you haven't done so already. Also be sure to register all your graded cards. That will offer at least some protection for the future. If you haven't done so already, a good gun safe is also a fine place to store your most valuable pieces. They'd need a fork lift to make off with your collection again!
The fact that your car was burned is crazy. Was there any real reason for this? Henry, I'm happy that you got your cards back. You did the right thing by grabbing the bull by the horns and doing it yourself. Law enforcement would have never gotten your cards back. I think everyone on these boards should learn from this experience.
What a crazy story and turn of events. I am ecstatic you got your collection back unharmed in the end. I feel it is unfortunate the guy won't be legally punished, but feel you took the right course for selfish and practical reasons. Getting the collection back would have been more important to me than having him punished if I were you. The car aspect does seem to be an avenue to still nail the guy. Don't include the cards - God forbid the police take that as evidence. You would never see it again.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
As I have said before, I am glad that you got back your collection in the same condition as it was when it was stolen.
To find out a FRIEND stole the cards had to really suck!
If you are happy with the end result, that is what really matters.
I still think the SIU squad of your auto insurance company will go after him.
STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Thanks again guys, really...as for the car, it was a 7 year old Honda Accord and I didn't have comprehensive insurance - so it was a total loss, I had to also pay for it to be impounded in its burnted condition, and I forked over 500 dollars for the lie detector test. The thing is, the guy is in no financial position to cover these losses so I just have to let it go. He is actually having a very hard time coming to grips with his deeds. As a great philosopher once said "I pity the fool!" (only us oldies know the source of that quote)

with that being said if you can "turn the proverbial other cheek" you are a better person than me.
even Pope John Paul II waited for the gunmen who tried to kill him to get time in jail before officially forgiving him. i don't know this thief but i cannot imagine he is much of a role model for his family.

Like others already expressed, when you collection got stolen, it made me get serious about securing and insuring my own collection.
