Even though there's still plenty of snow, most of the ground is thawed anywhere up to 2-8 inches - enough to dig most signals.

I'm going to pre-apologize for my drawn-out stories!

On Thursday (3/18) went to a local "tot lot." A couple of kids quickly came over to see what I was doing. They were very cool and were interested. Of course they followed me around, so I only dug the cent and nickel signals image. Gave them each a couple of coins. All of a sudden, the little boy looks down and picks up an earring, DOH! It was a larger silver-colored hoop earring but i don't know if it was junk or silver. Who needs a detector? Anyhow, I congratulated him on his find and left to search a different area while it was still light. No luck at place #2 and with 20 minutes of light left, I went back to the tot lot. The first signal was what looked like an earring, since it was dark, just shoved it in my pocket. Found a little clad after and went home. Turns out it was a ring that was stepped on, but it straightened out nicely. It is sterling silver and my silver #1 for the year.

Got out today for a couple hours. Picked up silver #2 (silver coin #1) - 1924 Merc and also found a 1912 V Nickel - which had a tough life. No mintmark though. Got a couple of buttons too... not too old though.

I was out yesterday for about 1/2 hour or so. I found a Lincoln Memorial cent, didn't even check the date. Following that was a huge washer, worth more than the cent if I had to buy it, several nails of varying lengths but old square heads. I'll be back to this place being that the house was built in 1770 and my son is moving into it next week. My grandson was into the hole with both feet the moment I uncovered anything so you could say I had way to much help.

Thanks! It was actually trips #4 and #5 for the year. Outings #1-3 yielded clad, a bubble gum machine ring, and a couple of wheats, so I didn't post anything for those. (Trip #1 was my 10 hour beach adventure that got 51 cents.)

    HH all

  • Nice finds!. And a great start for the year. That ring is pretty cool and the Merc is in great shape.

    Love those Mercs!

(Heck, I love those V-nicks, too, though most of mine are as crusty as yours there. My 1912 I dug was mintmarkless, too, alas.)

That button at lower left looks Victorian.

    Nice goin'! image
