Even though there's still plenty of snow, most of the ground is thawed anywhere up to 2-8 inches - enough to dig most signals.
I'm going to pre-apologize for my drawn-out stories!
On Thursday (3/18) went to a local "tot lot." A couple of kids quickly came over to see what I was doing. They were very cool and were interested. Of course they followed me around, so I only dug the cent and nickel signals . Gave them each a couple of coins. All of a sudden, the little boy looks down and picks up an earring, DOH! It was a larger silver-colored hoop earring but i don't know if it was junk or silver. Who needs a detector? Anyhow, I congratulated him on his find and left to search a different area while it was still light. No luck at place #2 and with 20 minutes of light left, I went back to the tot lot. The first signal was what looked like an earring, since it was dark, just shoved it in my pocket. Found a little clad after and went home. Turns out it was a ring that was stepped on, but it straightened out nicely. It is sterling silver and my silver #1 for the year.
Got out today for a couple hours. Picked up silver #2 (silver coin #1) - 1924 Merc and also found a 1912 V Nickel - which had a tough life. No mintmark though. Got a couple of buttons too... not too old though.
HH all!

<< <i>Nice finds.. silver on your first two hunts, wow... I certainly hope that is the harbinger of good fortune for the year. Cheers, RickO >>
Thanks! It was actually trips #4 and #5 for the year. Outings #1-3 yielded clad, a bubble gum machine ring, and a couple of wheats, so I didn't post anything for those. (Trip #1 was my 10 hour beach adventure that got 51 cents.)

Love those Mercs!
(Heck, I love those V-nicks, too, though most of mine are as crusty as yours there. My 1912 I dug was mintmarkless, too, alas.)
That button at lower left looks Victorian.
Nice goin'!
