Are we survivalists ?

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
I use the word "we" very loosely as I am very new to PM's. I have read and absorbed plenty in the two months since I caught this bug. One notion that I see repeated over and over again (not here) is that "we" are classified merely as SURVIVALISTS ........ constantly awaiting the complete collapse of economy in ways that dwarf the current climate. Similiar to those who hoard emergency survival products ....

Thoughts?

    My take:

A "survivalist" is someone who has bought the flashy, sexy, surface of the concept (MREs, surplus boots, cammo folding cot and SKS bandoliers) despite (or even in addition to) the actual logic and practicality of the concept.

Every able patriotic American should be responsible for and work to assure their own personal financial well-being. Just as every able, patriotic American should ensure their own necessities (food, water, clothing, shelter, heat, medicine) for themselves and every one of their immediate family.

Keeping a low debt level, living within your means, taking good care of yourself physically and mentally, keeping not just an emergency supply of food and water but several months or even a couple of years worth of healthy food and sundries for your family is not "survivalism". It's sound, logical, fiscally and morally responsible, and patriotic.

Precious metals are eschewed by people too scared to look in the mirror. Anyone who understands history--and you don't have to go back more than a few years or even months (Argentina, Zimbabwe, Belarus, etc) knows that you can't hyperinflate metals. Don't like them, don't think inflation or hyperinflation is likely? Keep your holdings to 3% or 5%.

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

It gets pretty weird around here when talk turns to 'guns and ammo'. Thankfully, there's not as much talk of it as there used to be, as most posters seem to have realized the out of work businessmen aren't taking to the streets in packs, plundering and pillaging as they go.

True, but you still have some die-hart apocalyptic doomsayers....just ignore them like I do and let common sense and knowledge be your guide.

Yep, just a bunch of lunatic fringe here, especially if you watch Financial TV, Except for Santelli.

Hey, did you see him the other day ripping the guy from Oppenheimer by pointing out who pays his salary?

Just "consider the source" no matter where you get your information. Everyone has a vested interest - the question is, "in what?"
