  • I should have bought that 1893 Half Crown (Canadacolornut) when i had the chance. Stunning coin - one of the best so far!
  • This my entry for the under $200.00 entry for the year. This bad boy was bought for $90.00 on Ebay in 2009.
I have never seen a more beautiful coin with atumnal toning ever! This came back as a MS65.

  • This is my entry for the over $200.00. This MS66 1873 Gothic Florin is just hard to find in any high grade.
These pictures are from Heritage and really do not show the true beauty of this coin but thats what i got for now!

My entry for under $200 ( or well over that once I get it back..tbd image ); is a recently purchased Palestine 2 Mil 1945 rare date in better MS grades which I believe will come in with a RED designation - the only RD designation in either service. Even if it does it the coolest one I've seen in decades.

Looks better in hand - my photo skills never made it to the top tier of the class image

  • I'm really enjoying this thread; so many great coins in one place.

Syracusian and Reveries; gorgeous! I wish I could find Jetons like Filty Broke comes up with; a truly fascinating series.

If you ever want to sell or trade that Florin Syracusian image
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.
It's just that I got my PCGS grades.

Only a couple of days left to get your entries in! image
  • I should have mentioned your William 111 sixpence Huss-beautiful, and in remarkable condition for the series.

    Politicking? Not really.

But nothing wrong with working the crowd image

My entry in the over category, a chocolate brown beer token. I've been wanting a decent example of this token for ever. From this past Ponterio B&M Baltimore auction:

  • George 111 sixpence.

A not so good rendition and definitely circulated-or at least "cabinet friction"-maybe AU 55 -58.

Posting it anyway in the "very close to under $200 and probably a great fit if I were a better negotiator" category image

Dang, a day late and dollar short, literally. I guess I'm the April Fool.

How come the COTY is being held in March, though?

Oh, I get it. A year back from March.

Well, once this is done with, we could have monthly coin popularity contests. We used to do that with metal detector finds on the MD forum for several years. The best finds of each month were chosen by "coolness factor" and popularity, rather than monetary value. Of course montetary value always counts heavily.

I voted in every poll. Not ashamed to admit I voted for my own entries. My poor coin photography is holding me back, I think. Either that, or my collecting tastes are not along the general lines...which is fine with me! image I was pleasantly surprised to see I was not the first vote for either of my entries.

I would be up for holding one of these monthly...and then at the end of the year, the 12 monthly winners face off to determine the Coin of the Year...Maybe instead of under $200, put it at $100 or lower/$100 or higher, instead of 200. Doesn't seem like there were many entries in the over 200 class.

Just my observation! I'd be perpetually in the lower class no matter what it is, LOL

I'd suggest even more price categories. Not too many, but four or five, maybe. I think we had five or six categories in the detector awards, at the height of their popularity. Eventually they got bloated and died off when people lost interest in keeping the monthly polls going, but they lasted a good four years or so, I think. They were my brainchild originally, but evolved as others made improvements. I made up little sig line "trophy plaques" ("Best Coin" of the month, "Most Silver Coins Found", etc.) Some people still wear those in their sigs. It was fun. All for nothing more than bragging rights and a little sigline trophy.

Sounds good but I won't have the spare time to set up a monthly one. Someone else could if they want to run with it?

Hussalo, I have more time then I know what to do with. I'll volunteer. Would I still be able to enter? Considering the vote is open to everyone I can't see a problem. I'd likely only enter 3-4 times a year anyway.

Yes by all means please do Billy you've got my vote but I'm not in charge, everyone has equal say on this forum and we all chip in to make the darkside the welcoming friendly place it is. I don't see a problem with you entering. I entered this one and expect no favouritism. Let the coins speak for themselves.

P.S. I just noticed I spelt favourite wrong in my first poll and because I copied and pasted a lot of sentences it ended up wrong in a lot of the following polls! image Oh well i was tired last night.

OK then, if there are no objections I will begin the first week of May, covering new coins purchased in April 2010.

Don't worry about the spelling....The pictures of the coins is what all eyes are drawn to I am sure! (myself included!)

  • Just a suggestion, but since some of us do collect the occasional modern coin, can or should we add a COTY in the 'Modern COTY' category for the particular year?
    I vote yes!

Here's the categories I am thinking of:

    Under $100
    Over $100
    Gold
    Ancient

I would be willing to do modern if there is enough support for it...I don't think a single entry was submitted that counts as modern this year, was it? (My definition of modern: 1965-current. What can I say, I know US coins the best! I define modern as post-Silver) That would be fine with me because 99% of my collection is "modern" any way you slice it!

I also figure if there is only one entry for a class it may be merged with another...say there is one modern and one ancient entry...how would you all want that handled? A faceoff against them, or an automatic win for each? Other suggestions? I am open to anything! image

Edit to add: If there is enough of an interest, I could also whip one up for tokens and medals. The board does seem to especially love Conders, doesn't it? image
