Antique Store TYPE SET Find! VERY Cool!

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
After a meeting today, I decided to see if there were any antique or coin shops around. No coin stores, but found a few antique shops. Most were junk, but I asked for coins to each one I went to. One person came out of the back with a frame, with all 20th century type coins! Some are in very nice shape including the Morgan, Peace Franklin etc. The IHC, Barber quarter, walking half all are very nice and original. It cost me $100, which I thought was a little pricey but it was too much fun to pass up. Some of the coins have very nice toning. More on the reverse.

Nice display..... A lot of them are really tacky but yours is not!

Fun pick up and you won't make a lot of money if you sold but probably would not
    lose any either. Just right!

Thanks! I think I could probably make a little over $100 selling the individually.

yep, the coins have been together probably 31 years ... you should definitely break them up immediately. image

seriously, nice find, invest in a VF barber half and maybe one or two other upgrades and the group is a keeper

Nice find... I would have considered that set - then bought it. image It is just a nice assemblage of coins and a pleasing display. Attractive to a collector, with no great value. Cheers, RickO

That brings back some memories. I put together a type set in that very frame (well, not that one, of course) when I was a kid. It was fun!

  • Ah! This post is dear to my heart.Quite a few years ago I found a Capital Type Set in an antique store.Just started to get interested in varieties, so when i checked the coins over I saw that the Peace Dollar had a break on the wing. After many E-mails,I was told to contact Leroy Van Allen,he answered and said it was a 1922-P Vam 5B,It graded PCGS AU 58 and was my first Vam and got me hooked on Vams. All from an antique store type set.image

Awesome story BigJay! image Do you still have the coin?

This really must have been fun to complete when these were available a few years ago. I have seen different ones at other coin stores, but it always seems the coins were polished or badly cleaned. This was the first wholesome set I found!

I also bought a frame with no coins in it so I can do my own! image

I bought a couple of wood 20th Cent Type set frames at a coin show a couple years ago and did one for the obverse and one for the reverse and have them hanging side-by-side. Put the best examples I could afford for each type in the sets. Makes a nice display. You should check the Morgan and Peace for varieties. A couple inexpensive upgrades will really make that a nice set!

The type sets in these holders were marketed by Littleton. For the most part, the dates and conditions assembled were common. I recall having snagged one with a Fine 12 '13-P Barber Half though. This type B reverse Washington came out of another set.
