HELP-Ebay Etiquette???

I have an auction currently running on ebay. I have no idea of the real value of the item that is for sale, I found it and knew that it was of worth
as a collectible. As soon as I listed it, it was bid on and will sale (min bid of $99) which is fine.

No more bids have been placed, but there are 20 watchers, and because I was very honest about not knowing what I had, the auction may not
be accurately described, as I have received several messages and can tell by the tone that people think they have found a hidden gem.

My question..... is it wrong to edit the listing to let all the watchers know that there are 20 of them, so that they know they will need to put in a great snipe...
OR
Is that a round about way of indirect shilling??

EDIT to add the link.

Auction Link

I literally couldnt find anything other than the engine.....But ebay has so few (relatively speaking Fleischmann brand items).

I dunno, is it possible for you to link the auction?

Or give out the auction number?

It is your item, you can do what you want with it.

You will get better advice if people would know what the item is though.

You could always withdraw the auction, find out what you really have and then relist it accurately. Look out for yourself.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with ending the auction and relisting it with the correct title and description. It's only fair to you.

If you don't want to do that, then I do suggest answering any PM's that you get and post the response in the description. That way, anything you answer is disclosed to everyone.
  • Ending auctions early and changing descriptions to suit interest will get you a certain reputation, but that's only important if you care about that certain reputation. There's nothing implicitly 'wrong' with it. Of course, as a buyer, I'd be a little miffed. And I probably wouldn't bid on your stuff again, but hey, whatever. To each his own. I don't bid on a lot of stuff anyway.

Reputation on eBay is reflected through feedback and obvious red flags, in this case, or any, removing an item and relisting it (or not to relist) is OK.

Prolly best to cancel the listing, do some research, and write a
new listing that explains what you have.

You can call Reynaulds, but if the set is special they will try to steal it
and won't give you the full info. They might be one of your "watchers."

I agree...cancel the listing and list it better....so the one bidder will be miffed...so what.........he is looking to steal it anyway, will probably relist it on Ebay himself once he has it in his hands, and sell it for the TRUE value of the item. Now who would you rather have the extra money....you or your bidder?

Start over and never say you don't know squat about what you have.

    Sounds very unprofessional IMO.

Good Luck, appears you have a nice item, some of those train guys are fanatical.

Never saw that one before, but I don't think it would matter one bit in the bidding.

    Good Day,
I don't think you have any choice but to end the item, I do not believe that E-Bay will let you Edit the description one Iota once an item has a bid.
    Been There...E-Bay wouldn't allow it!!!

I would end the listing to correct the title and add all the details about what's contained in the set. My only concern as a potential bidder is if you are in fact going to try to fit it all in a US Postal Service Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box, ouch.

  • Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I can end the auction, I feel bad about doing that as I hate that when being a buyer.

Ive sent some emails to some experts now to see what the value of it might be and will get it relisted.

I'm so frustrated with ebay. I don't usually sell anything on there.. but buy things all the time.. small purchases usually less than 20 bucks.. anyways.. if i buy something.. i usually send a paypal right away or at the latests 2 days later if i win over the weekend i'll pay on monday.. anyways.. i just sold my wife's old iphone on there.. some idiot bid on it.. won.. then i never heard from them for a week. so i opened a case.. they never paid. I couldn't give them negative feedback. so i relisted the item and the same friggin thing happend. i just don't get why people waste time bidding on things they have no interest on buying.. and the mkt for iphones is pretty active.. sorry i'm venting.. but very annoyed with ebay idiot buyers wasting my time. .. and ebay's stupid polocy about negative feedback

Don't feel too bad - perhaps you should have done more research before, but no reason to leave (possibly) decent change on the table. If you had agreed to sell for a price to an individual that's one thing - obviously not the case here.

NEVER list an iPhone as an auction.

Competitors run them up to inflate their own prices.

Punks bid on 10 phones and only pay for the cheapest one.

40 minutes to go on the train auction.

    Current bid: US $167.50

    Hope some snipers show up.

  • I say 275 -350, but friday is a bad day to end an auction in my opinion, but the train nuts are just that nuts (just kidding NOT), anyways I hope it goes for moon money 4-7 hundred or more. I think sometimes it is best to tell the truth, unless you got a red hand.

We all hope for 150% of market and want to buy at 35% of market. Who was that nice person that likes to eat cake. drink a beer take a qualude and enjoy. image

  • well 167.50 That Sucks , maybe that tells us how bad the economy really is. Ebay has become a mind field, (full of flea market idiots and lowballers that would offer 2 cents for a nickel to save u a trip to the bank.) I am sorry I am just fed up with watching items go under market value, but when I go to the grocery store everything is up 10% and no one complains. oh yea it is getting warm exxon says gas up to 3-4 a gallon yippie.

That set should have gone for a lot more than $167.

Sellers can and do edit descriptions, only it is as an add on. You can't change the original listing after a bid has been placed.

Also, I would never tell the world how many watchers I have.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Hi guys... yeah, I decided to let it ride. I emailed some people, Reynaulds said if the boxes had the celephane on the top, the overall box was better, etc.. it would be a 350 set, they said I should expect 200-225.

The other main reason, it finished with 32 watchers and had about 400 page views, so I expected some snipers. As I told one of the guys here in a PM, I literally found this set sitting on top of the trash last weekend.

Im not dissappointed overall (winner has already paid, and even though in germany, has a verified addy in the states)..... it was a nice find. Thanks for all the advice though guys.
