The horror- finally find a 1846-P dime, at a gun show of all places- PICS

Went to the gun show to get some parts for my M-16 and stopped by a old mans table with some coins. I asked if he had any half dimes and he said he did, I ended up buying 20 or so nice VF-XF half diems at a great tpice and a bust half I am going to need help attributing in a few becasue I can't for the life figure it out in overton? Anyways he asked if I wanted a 1844 dime, I said sure, he picked out a VG cleaned 1844 dime and said $500 bucks, to add to it looks like someone shot it with a #9 shot out of a shotgun. I didn't say anything and said nice coin and thanks. Told him I had been looking for a 1846 dime and he said he had one. He pulls this out. Granted it has been cleaned, but the scratch, which he admited being the perp when he removed it from a 2x2, my heart sank. But when he quoted $25 I said okay? Now what to do with it?

It is not as deep as the pictures leads you on, it is just my crappy picture abilities and the mad light I hold over the coin at an angle to take the picture.

No way is that a staple scratch. It's way too deep. Somebody cut it.

That does not surprise that you found it at a gun show. Every single gun show that I have attended over past couple of years, there have been several dealers selling coins. I have picked some decent purchases here and there.

maybe it was one of the old T-50 type staples I have seen old 2x2's sealed with? Who knows, not sure why he would lie.

Yes, the scratch is unfortunate, but that is a rare date coin at a dirt cheap price - a good hole filler for a circ date collection, and in the album, not many people will look at the rev anyway.

The occasional coin treasure can be found at gun shows....A lot of chaff, but the occasional kernel of wheat shows up. Cheers, RickO
