That is a very nice Shakey Shantle.

The piece has been authenticated by JSA (James Spence Authentication). I personally don't know all the idiosyncrasies of Mantle's graph, but James is USUALLY pretty good.

Just because it's really shakey doesn't mean it's not real. Other than it being shakey it seems to have the usual characteristics that his autograph has. He could have signed it while standing and signing the box would probably be pretty awkward if not flattened.

Really cool and unique item btw..

As a log time (35+ years) autograph collector this is the thing that really bugs me about so-called "authentication" services. All you are buying is an opinion, an educated guess.

If I were looking to buy this item for the Mantle autograph I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. However, the autograph market is such that with a JSA or PSA "seal of approval" the item becomes instantly marketable.

I think the operative question is - are you buying the item with the hope to resell later? If so, you have the JSA seal of approval and you'll probably be able to do so. If this were for my personal collection I'd pass.

one thing to consider is if the box was intact then signing an empty box, which offers little support, is not going to produce the best signature.

another thing to consider...Mick could have been loaded too.

I'm one of those in the group - no expertise or understanding.

My guess? Why forge an item like this?

Mantle does not sign exactly the same way every time but close - so - I do agree - any authentication is an educated guess.

PSA/DNA and witnessed by the owner of the card.

The box could have easily been difficult to sign.

    I am 90% sure it's good.

Signing the side of a box is much tougher than signing a flat item. I think thats why its shakey

That box has a little value by its self. I dont think forgers would try to sign something like that IMO. They usually sign cheap photos or balls.

PS I see others have said the same......

Hey if JSA says it's real it must be real...I only said I wouldn't buy it.

OK, I'm a little bitter because I spent good money with both JSA and PSA to get a pair of Thurman Munson signed cards THAT I GOT IN PERSON and both deemed them questionable. Unlike cards, you don't get any vouchers or credits if they bam your autograph submissions.

If you've read the Operation Bullpen book you'll understand - especially when it comes to Mantle, Williams and Dimaggio signatures there is SO MUCH of the Marino gang's stuff still out there, many of them with JSA and PSA certs, that you have no way of knowing with 100% certainty that they are good.

If you really want to buy a "real" autograph of those guys your best bet is to pay a little more and get a vintage signature.
