It would depend on the shows. I've been to some shows where dealers were falling asleep but I've also been to many shows when I didn't have a chance at all to stop for food or even for a restroom break.
Also it isn't unknown for some dealers to be asleep behind the table not because of lethargy, but because of narcotic or alcohol overdose. One dealer in his younger days was known for sleeping sprawled out on his back on top of his booth's backup table in the full view of the public.

Years ago, I occasionally dozed at the table, but it was because I was not getting the right kind of sleep at night. It never happened if the show was active, but late in the afternoon, when things were slowing down, it did happen.

If you're generalizing about all dealers then you should spend a weekend working on the other side of the bourse table. You'll learn quickly that everything's a 2-way street.

Just remember that the status of being a customer is not an entitlement to unilaterally act rude towards another person. Respect is a mutual necessity. That is true for the other side as well.

I agree 100% and hate rudeness on either side of the isle. However, you seemed to be making the excuse that it's ok for dealers to be rude because some customers are rude.
There's never an excuse in my opinion and for whatever reason (different discussion), the coin business attracts way more than it's fair share of rude obnoxious business people.

I never stated that it's okay for a dealer behind the table to be rude. In fact dealer rudeness is one of the biggest blackeyes in the business today and it is a trait that can easily alienate any potential newcomer. There are hardly any collectors or floor dealers who haven't experienced multiple occasions of unnecessary rudeness.
Numismatics is often an ego-driven hobby. Whether it's "my collection's worth more than yours" or "I know more than you do" or "I've been collecting for longer than you've been alive", etc., ego and one-upsmanship are chronic traits. A strong ego can lead to a superiority complex and superiority complexes are arguably one of the largest contributors to rudeness as people tend to act in a less polite manner when they believe they're "talking down" to someone.
With that being said, bourse dealers from all numismatic genres and price ranges can recall countless anecdotes of public attendees acting like total jerks without reason. As previously stated, rudeness happens from both sides, not just one.

<< <i>Yes i have seen quite a few people doze off, but they were in their 80s so its understandable. >>
I still have a few years to go until my 80s but I'll tell you don't have to be that old to doze off suddenly. This morning I woke up in a room with water everywhere. I was disturbed and confused. It took me a few seconds to realize that I was in the shower.

Are Coin Shows Ever So Boring that Dealers Fall Asleep?
I have never fallen asleep at a show...I mean, have you SEEN some of the folks at shows... I think it best to keep my eyes wide open at all times...
... but there have been a few shows that were so boring, I wished I had stayed home and slept in... or at least played a round of golf instead...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
No. But it seems customary during NFL season for dealers in the Buffalo, N.Y. area to pay more attention to a TV or radio broadcast of a Bills game, and it becomes really annoying when they jack the volume up because they think everyone else in the room is a Swills fan.
I have seen dozing dealers at coin shows. Not common, but more than once. As for the other topic of rudeness. I agree with WTCG. I have met the man and he is both a gentleman and a knowledgeable numismatist. Just take your time at coin shows and listen to some of the verbal exchanges between customers and dealers. It is an interesting experience. Although there are some very rude dealers (I am speaking of a couple of consistantly nasty dealers), I have observed far more rudeness and crass behavior coming from customers at coin shows. In many cases, I was amazed at the ability of the dealer to continue to treat the rude customer diplomatically. Although ego comes into play in these situations (as well as possessive pride), there is often obvious a serious character flaw demonstrated in some of these displays. Such a shame to have this occur in a genteel hobby such as coin collecting. Cheers, RickO

Don't feel bad. I node out frequently just from reading these boards. Whenever someone posts, "guess what happened to me the other day" or "guess what my coin grades" .... I'm out like a light.
