    New crap
  • I would start with an E93 Wagner and a Cracker Jack Shoeless Joe. Whatever I had left (if any) would be spent toward t206 portraits of the big four (Johnson, Young, Matty, Cobb).

On the issue of the newer RCs. I agree that the desire by the Hockey and Basketball collectors to buy the high end RCs is very strong. However one thing newer RCs have against them is that there are so many different ones produced that at some point they do compete with each other.

In terms of Mantle, Clemente and Aaron there is one RC to own of each. In Lebrons case there are lots of really nice other RCs that collectors can buy that are not Exquisite. Yeah I know people always want the best but when you do have viable alternatives I can see lots of people living with a Sp RC.

Heck alot of times there are newer RCs that are much harder to get than the highest priced RC but people are buying the BRAND and not the card. Not that much different than buying the HOLDER. Supply and demand have determined which one people will pay more for.

If you want a HOF baseball RC collection you HAVE to buy a 54 Aaron or 55 Clemente there are no alternatives.

Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

    my 2 cents...

I would NOT buy a 52 Mantle, for $5k you'd get a beater. If you are in the one card market, it would be hard to beat a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente. For $5k you'd get a PSA 8, vibrant color, well centered and the most coveted and toughest card in the 1955 Topps set, bar none. Only lower POP cards would be in more demand simply because of the scarcity of the card in PSA 8 grade.

The first thing you need to formulate is what makes you happy, not us, we all have different ideas of what appeals to us. For me, I have zero use for tobacco cards, others can't get enough of them. Some collect player sets, but then again, $5k only goes so far. For sure go with a reputable dealer and try to maybe work a deal for a discount of some kind if you decide to go with multiple cards.

FWIW, you can pick up a Clemente PSA 8 right now on eBay for well under $5k. The card will always sell and continue to appreciate over time.

    GL with your decison.
    Al

PS - saving the $5k makes sense too!!

I would look for perfectly centered PSA 8's (or 9's) of some of the HOFr cards that are almost impossible to find centered even in lower conditions. A couple come to mind - 58 Maris, 59 Gibson, 61 Maris.

    "Molon Labe"
