EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY (Coins!).
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR (Metal Detecting Discouraged) BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

That could be devastating. The 8.8 quake is huge, unimaginable by most people. If it causes a tsunami, the devastation will be incredible. Let's hope it does not, or if it does, the energy will dissipate by the time it crosses the Pacific. Cheers, RickO

What is lacking from the warning is what wave heights will do when entering shallow water. The heights given are open ocean, but like normal waves, they crest as they enter shallow water and a half meter open ocean wave can become much higher.

Wow... 8.8 magnitude! It looks like it was centered away from major populations (Santiago (200 mi away) & Concepcion (~70 mi away)).

I lived in the islands when I was younger. We used to have warnings several times a year, but never any wave. The only one I know of hit Hilo on the big island in '60 and caused a lot of damage. The warnings used to serve as notice of a party as most people who lived near the water would move inland a bit to someones house that was above sea level, then break out the ukeleles and Primo!

They 7.0 quake in Haiti had the equivalent of 32 megatons of TNT

Now the 8.8 quake in Chile has the equivalent of 15.8 GIGATONS!

I hope Hawaii stays safe.

The Richter scale is logarithmic, so each point makes a BIG difference (unlike coin grading )

A 9.5 magnitude quake hit near the same area about 50 years ago... A tsunami that was generated by that quake killed dozens in Hawaii.

Well just doing the math on the amount of TNT it has 493.75 times the explosive power of the Haiti earthquake. So I would guess around 500 times stronger based on that factor.

When the earthquake in Haiti hit, I TOLD my mom that this was going to be a bad year. She just said whatever. Not even March and we are getting rocked...literally! For the people affected, stay safe and get to high ground!!

The Richter Scale is very simple, you just calculate the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a WA torsion seismometer output. The figure quantifys the amount of energy released.

Hilo Airport and Harbor are closed however there a few crazy surfers out in the ocean. Banks are closed so it is too late to get the coins out and head for the high land. Shopping centers and gas stations are crowded as people are stocking up. Sams Club are allowing non-members in to stock up, Costco is not doing the same. Hopefully the waves won't be large. The sea level is expected to rise 6 feet flooding the low areas

We had a tsunami surge here in Ventura Harbor about two hours ago ... it popped one of the lines on my boat and wrecked my neighbors dock. Not much of a wave, but the tide dropped, my boat grounded and then the surge came in and it looked like rapids coming in and going out.
