The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book

Has anyone ever seen a list of all of the players that are featured in this famous baseball card book? This was my favorite book as a kid back in the late 70's and I recently purchased it again.

I've decided to try and get each of the cards listed in this shown in the Profiles section of this book in PSA and show them off as a Collectors Showcase. I think there are 200+ cards in the book. I started going through the book and listing them all in an excal spreadsheet, but I was wondering if the list of cards was out there already?

If you like 50's and 50's baseball, you've got to read this book.

Geez I loved that book as a kid. I will definitly have to find me a copy and the collection idea to find all the cards featured in that book is a unbelieveably great idea!!If someone comes up with a checklist I hope they will post it because I would love to do that collection!!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I had started the checklist (and actually picked up two of the cards so far), but I was hoping there was a list out there somewhere already. I'll work on it in the next few days and post it when I finish.

Which card led the author to ask, "Was his hair too tight?"

(Assuming I am thinking of the correct book)

The 1960 Topps Unitas card is a classic - even though it's football, I'd definitely make that part of the collection
  • GREAT book!! Might be kinda pricey to put together the cards featured in there, I recall a '56T Jackie, 53T Paige, 55T Williams, 63T Clemente among others, oddly no Mantles though.

"No, Bob Cerv is not trying to knock himself unconscious with a fungo bat"

There are definitely some high-priced cards in there, but not too many. Plenty of lesser lights with fun stories to keep the costs down. I'd be happy with PSA 6-7 on most cards, with nicely-centered 4's and 5's on some of the higher priced ones.

I know there is a Koufax rookie in there, plus 56 Jackie Robinson, 52T Bobby Thomson high number, and the Paige, but I can always get them near the end and just concentrate on the cheaper guys now.

My favortie card might be the 1952 Topps Gus Zernial - I love how they goof on his pink t-shirt as well as how he got the baseballs attached to his bat.

    From the book:
How do you suppose they got those baseballs to stay up there anyway? Nails? Scotch tape? Postage stamp hinges? And why do you think Gus is giving us the high sign? Is he trying to assure us that everything is ok? Is he trying to indicate to us that he thinks the Athletics are a big zero? Does he want a cinnamon doughnut to go? And why is he wearing a pink undershirt?

I remember about 20 years ago buying a 3x5 autograph of Toby Atwell for no other reason other than I remembered reading about him in the book

My favorite line from the book:
Who the hell is Milo Candini, and why are they saying such terrible things about him?

    Cuno Baragon?

You're right, Griffiths. It was Cuno Barragan. That line always cracked me up!

As a kid, I remember laughing out loud at the Unitas comments.

Thanks for the Zernial post. Another classic.

IIRC, it also introduced those too young (me, born in 64) to see him play to the immortal ears, nose...well, just the whole face of Don Mossi. For some reason, when I hear Centerfield and the line goes " a brown eyed handsome man" , Mossi's face comes to mind a nanosecond after Jackie Robinson (whose image appears at that line in the video). I don't know why. .....Ok, I do. Because it is funny.
  • Thats really a great book! Have a copy somewhere, will have to dig it out.

Great idea on the Collector's Showcase. I could see myself picking those up. The book is hilarious with plenty of irreverent humor that many around here would get a kick out of. I like the one about Smoky Burgess where they say he was fat like your Uncle Dwight.

  • I really loved that book also. I believe it got me into collecting the older cards back then. The cards were so cool looking along with the funny comments that have been mentioned. Everytime I see the Zernial card I notice his pink shirt. Great childhood memory for sure.
  • I bought it in 1976 when I was ten. It was the first time I had ever seen most of those cards. And I learned a little something about a lot of players. When I got a Sibbi Sisti autograph in the early 1990's, that book was all I could think of. A classic!!!

I finally finished the list of cards from the book - I included all the cards in the Profiles section - looks like 241 cards in all!

I have 2 cards from the list - 60 Estrada and 63 Duren - going to be a LONG process. But fun, I hope. As I pick up different ones, I'll throw out some scans of my new purchases.

I loved this book as a kid also. I, too, will have to go and dig mine out. Funny thing about the Zernial card... I sent one to him TTM to sign for me about a month ago. I got it back last week. He forgot to sign the card, but he did say that he attached the balls to the bat with scotch tape!

I bought the book when it came out.I have read it at least 5 times.I could really relate to that book. But my stores were Polish Crows Market and Jack & Dorthys soda fountain store in Detroits North East Side.
