Multi holder tampering?

While browsing various forum threads to cure my insomnia, and while trying to catch up on things as a new member, I noticed somebody mentioned that coin multi holders were liable to tampering, and that coins in graded multi holders might have been replaced with inferior examples. Nobody seemed to follow up on that comment, and I've lost that thread. My forum search for it failed.

Please allow me to renew that topic: are there documented examples of graded multi holders with fraudulent coin substitutions? Were they PCGS multi holders?

Not familiar with that opinion and don't believe the multiholders are any more compromisable than the single coin holders. --jerry

Original, from the USMint, "multiholders" (ie, proof sets) can a lot of times be opened and coins replaced, then "resealed".
The NGC multiholders I don't think are prone to being tampered with unnoticeably (I have a few). I haven't seen the PCGS ones, but I would believe the same to be true there.

The "self-slab" multiholders are a whole other deal though. I have some of those and they are not sealed at all, just snapped together. If a non-reputable "grading" company (I use the term "grading" lightly here), were using these self-slabs, like I know some did on ebay a few years ago, then, yes, easy to pull out coins and replace.

Good thought. I bet that is what he read about--original mint holders.

I have a PCGS Multiholder in hand and it is solid as a rock. If it were round, I think you could use it as a hockey puck. --Jerry

PCGS does have some multi holders for the pres. proof sets and SHQ...

It would be bette to use the term 'tamper resistant'. Tamper proof is highly unlikely given today's technology. Just as there is no unpickable lock. Cheers, RickO

A few months later, decided to sell it and when I was taking pics, I noticed one side looked discolored. Upon closer inspection, you tell where the minute cracks were and the glue residue. I was fairly shocked. I cracked it and took the coins out as I could not sell it knowing it had been opened. They were 69's as graded and the price I paid was less than 50 bucks. As I recall, the Monroe coin was not of the same quality as the other ones. Learned a relatively cheap lesson. Now, I always closely examine the slab no matter which of the big TPGs the coin(s) are housed in.

I would have sent it to PCGS for their opinion. If it has been opened, they would like to have known about it. There have been a couple of documented problems with the sealing machine on single slabs which PCGS fixed promptly. --Jerry
