Sorry, but another example of the term "Monster" being overused. That coin is nice, but certainly not a monster.

Nice, but nothing I would pay extra special money for. It does have a nice look, but a little darker than I like.
Obv is better than rev, to me.

But, if you enjoy the coin, then all is good image

I think it's very handsome. I'm not a Franklin-guy so I don't have a lot to compare. But this one appeals to me. It looks genuine (in the right sense). I'll bet the hit to the bell is not as prominent as it appears in the image.

Can you explain the tiny white spots on the obverse? I assume that's on the coin and not the holder. Is that just part of the toning development?

You are correct... the hit to the bell is barely noticeable in hand. If fact, you would not even notice it if you were not looking for it.
The larger than life pictures makes it stand out. The spots on the obverse is just part of the toning development.

Thanks for the kind words. This has become my new favorite Franklin in my NGC registry.

Nice colors but not a monster.. maybe for the date NGC gave it the star but otherwise.. not a monster.. orange.. purple .. are prominent colors in the begining of the toning process so they are more common than the later deep green that takes so long to develope. It's my opinion that deep green colors are the toughest to develope so most monster have that.

For whatever reason I'm only seeing images of the NGC slab picture and the obverse picture... but not seeing the reverse, hence I can't see what sort of reed marks people are talking about or the colors of the reverse. However, from what I can see, the obverse alone is certainly deserving of a "Monster" designation for a 1949-S.

'49-S's are a tricky coin vis-a-vis toning. Most of them are butt ugly, and it is quite difficult to find a nice looker. OTOH, they are one of the most common Franklins for finding a starred coin (the last time I looked they had the third highest population of starred Franklins out of 35 date/mm), so some do come quite nice. This is NOT the same as saying they are easy to find starred... all starred Franklins (well, maybe minus the '58-D) are tough coins to find.

The obverse color on this coin is truly superior... for Franklins in general, and particularly for '49-S's. Very nice pickup, Coiny! image

i don't think the tone is anything over the top but as others have said it's quite nice for the date/mm.

The coin originally sold on TT right? The obverse looks nice but not my favorite looking toner, but for the date/mm it is above average.

Pretty for sure. But I would have to see the coin in hand, as I see some characteristics that lead me to believe the coin MAY be AT.

    I hope I am wrong.

    Hear Hear, Shane.

Why is it that whenever someone posts a coin here that they're proud of, invariably someone has to come out of the woodwork and dump on it?

OP, this is a nice ORIGINAL piece and you don't have to walk backwards on it for anyone.

I've seen many Franklins with more and more severe marks than that graded 66 by PCGS & NGC.

MS66 does not mean mark free.

I'm NOT trying to be nasty; I've seen better frankies in 64 holders.

I just got in a truly original and fresh 1949 Mint Set - the 1949-S matching Franklins are stunning and "dripping original" (the best coins in the set). Congrats to the OP for enjoying 49-S Franklins so much! I do too.

    i think that's a weeeeeeee bit of ownership taliking!!image

while i certainly agree that the pictures greatly exaggerate the reeding mark it's located in a place where it's nearly impossible to miss. to my way of thinking the coin's quality must be that much better than the pictures lend us to believe if the graders overlooked that "dig" and gave it a 66*.

Nice, but I'd take your fingerprint coin over this one. That copper colored toning doesn't do much for me.

Yeah, absolutely. I've sent in some that I thought were 64 and had them come back 66. I've seen plenty of others that are in 64 slabs and I'm scratching my head why they aren't AT LEAST a 65. That is one thing that does bug me about TPG grading of Frankies. It can be wildly all over the place. Regarding the reedmark, that is certainly well within 66 territory for Frankies given that it's on the reverse. The obverse looks quite clean for the grade, although there might be something going on in the field above "IN"... it's hard to tell from the image.

As to AT/NT I'm reasonably comfortable with the coin being NT. Actually I'd be more concerned as to the coin being FBL as several areas look iffy FROM THE IMAGE (which may solely be a function of how the coin was imaged as I've got several Frankies that are truly FBL, that when imaged it's hard to tell they are FBL). As to those that are saying, "Mrumphh", regarding the toning, like I said, the average toning for '49-S's is butt ugly. Just to put things in perspective here's my 1949-S, which I am VERY happy to own. It's an NGC MS65*FBL.
